About this activity

Begin your small group, 8-hour journey in the afternoon with your 14 passenger transit van and naturalist interpretative guide with a stop at world famous Rainbow Falls. Enjoy spellbinding views of this famous waterfall and catch a glimpse of the rainbow in the mist as it reflects off the Hawaiian sun. Next, we’ll drive to a remote location where you’ll have an exclusive opportunity to descend into the depths of a private lava tube and experience first hand how lava once traveled underground through this massive cave system. Your guide will lead you safely into it's depths as you discover and learn about the cave's unique golden shimmer.

Continue your adventure as you arrive at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park to explore the natural wonders of this World Heritage site. We’ll hit the “hot spots” of the park along with some of the lesser visited attractions that many visitors overlook. The park, which is both a World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Preserve, is filled with must-see spots such as the active Kilauea. Throughout the afternoon, your guide leads your group on moderate 1.5-mile (2 km) hikes, with breaks in between, along mostly flat trails; if need be, you can use provided walking sticks in areas with uneven or muddy terrain. Since Pele (the fire goddess said to live here) is unpredictable, it’s not guaranteed that you get to see lava flowing firsthand on this hike, but your guide will do their best to take you to prime viewing spots if the conditions are safe.

When Kilauea isn't erupting, you actually get to walk the summit caldera, peer down steam vents, and marvel at the cinder fields. Such dramatic displays aren't the only natural wonders of the park. You'll also explore trails carved into a native rain forest before you head to a spot where you'll get to see active lava glowing at twilight.

After a hot dinner made of locally sourced ingredients we’ll visit Jagger Museum overlooking Halemaumau Crater which contains a hidden lake of lava that lights up the sky after dark. Join us, and experience the dynamic energy of Kilauea, one of the most active volcanoes in the world.

Your Big Island volcano tour includes beverages, snacks, and a delicious warm picnic style dinner. Guests may choose from a Hawaiian Teriyaki Chicken, Braised Kalbi Beef Ribs, or Yellow Thai Curry (vegan and gluten free). All served with steamed rice, fresh vegetables, and haupia sweet potato pie.
