Kings, Kohala and Paniolo HILO

1 day
About this activity

Experience Kohala with Kings and Paniolo on the Big Island of Hawaii, the birthplace of King Kamehameha. Begin your adventure with a scenic drive along the stunning Hamakua Coast. Stop at Tex Drive-In, famous for made-to- order malasadas. These fried Portuguese sweet treats were originally brought to Hawaii by immigrants who worked in the cattle industry and have been a local favorite ever since. Traveling Kohala’s mountain road from Waimea Hawi, enjoy one of the most worthwhile and scenic drives on the island along the spine of Kohala Volcano. Next, hike into alluring Pololu Valley. Black sand beach dunes covered with vegetation create one of the most spectacular panoramic views on the Island of Hawaii. The enormous Pu’ukohola Heiau located more than 40 miles away was created with stones passed hand to hand from this valley on orders from the King. Travel to the original statue of King Kamehameha. Commissioned in 1878 and cast in Paris the statue commemorates the King’s conquest and unification of the islands. Explore postcard-perfect Hawi town, know as the bicycle turn-around for the annual IRONMAN race and chock full of artist’s galleries and specialty shops. Enjoy a delicious lunch at one of Hawi’s best restaurants with some free time to shop in town and explore the small sugar plantation museum and visitor’s center. Conclude the tour in Paniolo Country, Waimea. Celebrate the pioneers who helped establish the Big Island’s vibrant ranching community as your National Park Service trained guide reveals the historical and cultural significance of Waimea’s paniolo landmarks including Parker Ranch. Walk back in time as you navigate the Parker’s two historic homes. The original Parker home, Mana Hale, built by John Palmer Parker and Hawaiian Chiefess Kipikane in the early 19th century, along with luxurious Pu’uopelu purchased by John Parker II in 1879 are both preserved and rich with heirlooms. Return to Hilo via Saddle Road climbing between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. Catch vistas of Pohakuloa Training Area, the largest American military installation in the Pacific before descending through the Forest Reserve into Hilo.
