From Hilo, the drive 45 minutes to Volcanoes National Park, ascending to 4,000 feet above sea level. Once inside the park, you'll make your way to see the amazing Kilauea Caldera with the smoking lava lake. Experience the steam vents that allow you to feel the extreme heat coming out of the ground. Kilauea Iki overlook is the next stop where you will see evidence of the massive 1959 event.About a minute down the road is where you'll begin a 15 minute walk through a rain forest into Thurston Lava Tube, which was formed hundreds of years ago. Ten minutes down the road is where its recommend to take a leisurely 15 minute walk down Devastation Trail being witness to the absolute destructive power of Kilauea Iki.
The fun continues down Chain of Craters Road which goes 20 miles all the way to the ocean taking you through lush forest opening up to the destructive lava flows, back to forest, lava flows, etc. Several stops are made along the way to explore past lava flows, which requires walking over actual lava from 1969-1974.
Once at the park, drive back towards Hilo with a stop at an orchid garden (time permitting), Rainbow Falls and a black sand beach.
Being on a private tour allows you to make additional stops or changes based on your interests and desires. This tour is totally flexible and can start as early as 4am, getting to Volcanoes National Park when it is still dark to see the glow from the lava lake and witness the amazing sunrise (weather permitting, of course).
This tour is not available from the Kona side of the island. If staying on the Kona side, you are more than welcome to drive over to Hilo and meet in the Walgreens parking lot.
