About this activity
Choose the best day to explore the Sea Islands. At 9:00am, meet your professional and friendly guide at the Beaufort Downtown Marina Store, located at 1006 Bay Street. Find a seat in the air conditioned van and head to the Penn Center to begin your 3-hour tour.
Founded in 1862, the Penn Center was created to provide education to recently freed slaves on the Sea Islands. Listen to your guide recount the fascinating history of the founding women. Walk around the grounds where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. After learning about the Gullah culture and language, make your way to the St. Helena District.
Visit the second largest cotton plantation in the St. Helena District, comprised of 3,000 acres. Continue your tour as you drive down the Avenue of Oaks and pass the Praise House and Slave Cemetery. Then, go to a private plantation and admire the beautiful grounds as you walk around.
Explore the history and Gullah culture of the Sea Islands on this 3-hour tour.
