3 days
About this activity
Day 1: Tsuwano - Small Historical Castle Town aka ‘Little Kyoto’ Tour (Lunch & Dinner Included)

We will meet at 8:30 at Higashi-Hasgi Station and take a microbus to Tsuwano. Tsuwano is a small castle town also known as ‘Little Kyoto’ due to its history and cultural features. We will start at Taikodani Inari Shrine, with its one thousand vermilion torii gates, and then take the chair-lift to the ruins of Tsuwano Castle. We will visit Tsuwano Catholic Church and Otome Pass, the place of banished Christian martyrs. After lunch we will visit a tea farm where you will be able to see how tea is made as well as take part in a tea ceremony experience. We will then return to Taikodani Inari Shrine. Here we will have our dinner of soba or udon noodles, a local specialty. Afterwards we will enjoy a performance of iwami kagura, a vibrant and traditional Japanese theatrical dance frequented by the locals.

Day 2: Hagi - Hagi (World Heritage Site) Culture, Crafts and Nature Tour (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner included)

On the second day, we will head to the World Heritage listed coastal town of Hagi. After experiencing the town’s crafts, we will head to Tsubaki Gunseirin, a camellia grove of some 25,000 camellia trees. The grove covers an area of nearly 10 hectares. From here we trek to the summit of Mount Kasayama in the center of Kita-Nagato Kaigan Quasi-National Park. Next up is Hagi Seaside Market, the oceanfront “Kitchen of Hagi”, where local producers supply only the freshest ingredients. Lunch will be at a restaurant that features the fresh delicacies of seafood caught off the coast. After lunch we will visit Kosaian Hagi pottery where you will have the chance to create your own piece of pottery as well have the opportunity to buy souvenirs. Next, we will take a walking tour through downtown Hagi, an incredibly well-preserved World Heritage Site where you can get a taste of what life was like during the Edo period in a typical samurai town.

Day 3: Hagi-Okan - Historical & Natural Sites of Yamaguchi Prefecture Tour (Breakfast & Lunch Included)

The final day will be a guided tour of Hagi-Okan, a roadway which samurai used to use to travel between Hagi and Mitajiri (present day Hofu). We will visit the World Heritage Site, Shoka Sonjuku, the school that was home to many future individuals who played an active part in the Meiji Restoration. Other highlights of the last day are the Buddhist temple Rurikoji, Kouzan Park and the Japanese garden Sesshu at Joueiji Temple. The pagoda at Rurikoji is one of the greatest architectural feats of the Muromachi period. It is the 10th oldest pagoda in Japan, and is considered one of the three famous pagodas in Japan. We will finally head to Yuda Onsen for a stroll around the hot spring town and a dip in a bath before returning to Higashi-Hagi Station at around 7pm.
