30-4 PARK

This small, shady, central HCMC park takes its name from Vietnam's Reunification Day as April 30 marked the fall of Saigon. It offers a cool respite courtesy of its tall trees and it connects Reunification Palace with Notre Dame Cathedral. A hub of activity and a popular gathering place for locals, 30-4 Park is a splendid place to people watch.

30-4 Park is named after Vietnam's Liberation Day, 30th of April. It is beautifully located between the Reunification Palace and Notre Dame Cathedral in the center of Saigon. Thus, 30-4 park is a popular place for people to chat with friends or to grab some shade and sip a drink. Take your camera and buy a cold drink from one of the nearby park vendors and bask in the commotion.

Duration: 25 minutes

Stop At: Saigon Notre Dame Cathedral, 01 Cong xa Paris Ben Nghe Ward, District 1, Ho Chi Minh City 700000 Vietnam

Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon

Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon (French: Basilique-Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Saigon), officially Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of The Immaculate Conception (French: Basilique-Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Immaculée Conception) is a cathedral located in the downtown of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Established by French colonists who initially named it Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Saïgon, the cathedral was constructed between 1863 and 1880. It has two bell towers, reaching a height of 58 meters (190 feet).

All the original building materials were imported from France. Tiles have been carved with the words Guichard Carvin, Marseille St André France (perhaps stating the locality where the tiles were produced). Some tiles are carved with the words “Wang-Tai Saigon”. Many tiles have since been made in Ho Chi Minh City to replace the tiles that were damaged by the war. There are 56 glass squares supplied by the Lorin firm of Chartres province in France. The cathedral foundation was designed to bear ten times the weight of the cathedral.

Duration: 20 minutes

Stop At: Central Post Office, At the top of Dong Khoi St opposite Notre Dame Cathedral, Ho Chi Minh City 70000 Vietnam

The Central Post Office in Ho Chi Minh is a beautifully preserved remnant of French colonial times and perhaps the grandest post office in all of Southeast Asia. Located next door to Notre Dame Cathedral, the two cultural sites can be visited together and offers visitors a chance to imagine life in Vietnam during the times of the Indochinese Empire. The building was designed by Alfred Foulhoux and features arched windows and wooden shutters, just as it would have in its heyday in the late 19th Century.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Saigon Opera House (Ho Chi Minh Municipal Theater), 07 Lam Son Square Street District 1, Ho Chi Minh City 700000 Vietnam

The Municipal Theatre, otherwise known as the Saigon Opera House, sits in Lam Son Square at start of Le Loi Street. Le Loi is the popular shopping street that runs from the park across the road through to Ben Thanh market. The surrounding area could be in one of Europe’s finest cities were it not for the usual crazy traffic on the surrounding streets. It is adjacent to the classical Continental Hotel and is close to other impressive architectural beauties like the new Union Square shopping plaza, The Rex Hotel and Saigon City Hall. It’s proximity to other popular sites make it a logical stop on any walking tour around Ho Chi Minh City.

Duration: 15 minutes

Stop At: Nguyen Hue Street, Nguyen Hue, Ho Chi Minh City 70000 Vietnam

Nguyen Hue Street is a broad walking promenade in the middle of District 1 city centre. This pedestrian area is flanked by some beautiful French colonial architectural wonders like the People’s Comittee, the Rex Hotel and a luxury shopping mall. In front of the People’s Committee you find a statue of Uncle Ho Chi Minh and a fountain show by night.

At the other end of the promenade you find the Saigon River from where you can enjoy a nice view with a breeze. Walking from one end of the street to the other takes you around ten minutes and you will find some nice bars and restaurants along the way. It is nice to walk on Nguyen Hue Street, or take a seat on one of the benches, to have a look at the daily life and routine of the locals.
