2 days
About this activity
Each day the tour departs Hobart - 8:30AM (hotel pick up prior). Returns to Hobart approx. 5:30PM (6:30PM for Maria Island day)
Day one - Wednesday - Maria Island Grand Picnic - Walking, Wildlife, Food and Wine.
• Drive to Triabunna (70mins), Boat trip to Darlington (30mins)
• Morning Tea before ferry. We view the map and give welcome to the Island. Freshly brewed tea and coffee, light snack.
• Spend the morning walking to the Fossil Cliffs (2hr hours loop), enjoying the views of Bishop and Clerk and watching the local wildlife in their natural environment.
• Gourmet lunch will be served outdoors or inside "The Mess Hall' convict building. All produce is sourced locally and represents Tasmania's fresh, world-class reputation for fine food..
• The afternoon will be spent walking to the vibrant Painted Cliffs* (1 hour return) and learning about the rich natural and cultural history of the island.
• After the walk, the remainder of our time on Maria Island will be spent tasting premium local wines, relaxing by the beach and keeping an eye out for more wildlife.
Terrain; Beach walking, mixed forest, cliff-lines, short hills and historic sites.
*Access to the painted cliffs is tide dependent.
Day two Thursday - Tasman Peninsula - A Day to Cape Hauy - A taste of the 3 capes track.
• Scenic drive via the seaside towns of Dunalley & Eagle Hawk Neck, learning the harsh convict history from this natural prison.
• Enjoy morning tea with hot coffee while looking over the map for the days walk. Fresh baked goods and Tassie fruit.
• The hike to Cape Hauy is a 8KM return walk. The first section is a great warm up for the day. The trail work is some of the best in the country, pleasantly placed rock steps, skirting the coastline then winding up in-land.
• Cape Hauy is the last leg of the newly opened Three Capes Track, jutting out into the Tasman Sea, the track concludes on the cliffs edge, 150M above the water. Enjoy panoramic views to Cape Pillar, Hippolyte Rock and Maria Island.
• View spectacular dolerite columns popular with dare-devil climbers. Sea stacks known as the "Candlestick" and "Totem Pole" are you may be pleased to know, not a part of this great short walk.
• On returning to Fortescue Bay, enjoy a BBQ afternoon lunch by the beach with a glass of wine or local beer with your toes in the clear waters. Enjoy a swim or walk the beach before we hit the road home.
Walking time: 4 hours | Walking distance: 8KM | Track Rating 4: Steep stair sections, undulating terrain, exposed cliff lines, board walked with signed tracks.
