About this activity
Since the fictional land of Shangri-La was first described in the novel Lost Horizon, the mere mention of the name has conjured up visions of an earthly utopia. In 1935, 22-year old Doris Duke, heiress to the vast Duke tobacco fortune, came to Hawaii on her honeymoon with husband James Cromwell. It was here on the slopes of Diamond Head that she found the site for the estate she planned to build. The estate she would later name Shangri-La. On our 2-hour tour along the beautiful Pacific Ocean, well climb past the historic lighthouse that stands guard on the weathered brow of Diamond Head and travel to the secluded and picturesque Cromwells beach. As the ocean doorstep of Dukes Shangri-La estate, she could often be found swimming behind the breakwater or paddling out to surf with her good friend Duke Kahanamoku. Along the way, youll also be treated to some of the best views on the island from the Amelia Earhart look out. There are plenty of interesting sights and a few scandalous stories your guide can share with you during several short stops on your journey.
