About this activity
The tour begins when you are picked up from the Excursions Hub at Icy Strait Point. A short drive along Shaman Point to the Hoonah City Commercial Dock will have you at the boat. Along the way, keep an eye out for local wildlife including bald eagles, blacktail deer, and more. Hoonah is home to the largest concentration of Alaskan Brown Bears in the world.

While traveling along the shorelines, sightings of bears, deer, coastal ducks and geese, blue heron, puffin, swans, terns, cormorants and more are common. In the water you may get a chance to spot humpback, Orca, sea otters, sea lions, porpoises, and seals. Your captains are knowledgeable guides who are happy to share their wealth of knowledge. The boats are built for speed and comfort, and perfectly suited for travel along Alaska’s waterways. With viewing decks and heated cabins, guests will stay warm and dry as they experience the wonder and beauty of the trip.

Humpbacks are amazingly active and typical whale sightings will include diving, blows, and flukes (tails). Lucky whale-watchers may get to see bubble-net feeding, a cooperative feeding method where a pod forms a circle and dives under the water. They then blow air to create a wall of bubbles that force krill and plankton to the surface where the whales can eat them.

You will return to the docks and enjoy transport back to Icy Strait Point with plenty of time to board your ship or explore downtown Hoonah.

We enjoyed this tour on our Icy Strait Point stop during our Alaskan cruise. The boat we were seated on was new and very comfortable. We had about 28 guests on the tour, so it was not crowded and we all had a great view of the sea from the boat. I was so glad to be on this tour, instead of the cruise-line tour, which seemed to have over 100 people. The captain is an Alaskan native, and was very knowledgeable about the area. We saw humpback whales, sea lions, and sea otters.

The whale watch adventure was the highlight of all excursions. We were blessed with an amazing captain and incredible wildlife seen in the water and on the shore. Though we were in a covered vessel, we could walk on the bow or stern to get outside and take in a better view. We loved this!

We were concerned because we passed up the cruise ship tour looking for a smaller tour. This was small, but not as small as we had heard about 20 people, but it was AMAZING!!! I would book this same tour three times over. We easily found the gathering point and Angie was there waiting to take us to our boat. The guideI'm so sorry I forgot his name was SOOOO knowledgeable about the wildlife and even more so about the area. He worked hard to make sure we got to see as much as possible including but not limited to humpbacks, orcas, sea lions, seals, and sea otters. It really felt like he gave us a taste of what it is like to live there. This group also gave great service and allowed us the flexibility to explore the area before providing a shuttle back to the ship at our convenience. They also operated a bear tour and would allow you to combine the two together we wanted to walk around instead. I recommend this tour to anyone who is stopping at Icy Straight Point. Don't be afraid to skip the cruise provided tour. These guys do it better.

This trip was the very best with an experienced and well versed captain. We have been on nearly a half dozen whale watch trips but this was the best by far. I highly recommend the trip, the people and the experience! David

Great small boat experience, especially Cpt Paul. Saw many whales, including bubble feeding.
