About this activity
Located midway between Hue and Danang/Hoi An, Bach Ma National Park covers an area of 22,000 ha, and is home to a wide variety of animals and plants. This trip is for nature lovers. You leave Hue or Hoi An at 8 am and drive on a bumpy and sinuous road to reach the summit of Bach Ma. We provide an overview of the park's conservation efforts through an educational video tape. In the summit area, there are some species of rare conifers like Bach Ma pine (Dacrydium elatum), Podocarpus neriifolius and Podocarpus fleuryi. In February, the red blossoms of the Rhododendron species - Rh. simsii - can be seen along small streams and in particular at the bottom of the Rhododendron waterfall. You will meet a funny forest keeper who also is our tour guide today and will take one of the below options The Pheasant trail: The entrance to this trail is only five km away from the park's gate and, therefore, an ideal place to explore Bach Ma on foot. The trail leads through tropical forests to the beautiful Pheasant waterfalls where you can take a refreshing swim. As the name suggests, there are many pheasants living in this area - although the dense vegetation means that usually these are heard rather than seen. This trail is nicknamed "leech alley" since these nuisance creatures are out in force particularly during the rainy season. The Khe Su village garden tour: This two hours' tour offers visitors a chance to experience some typical Vietnamese home gardens and learn a little bit about rural life in the buffer zone of the national park. The guided tour leads you to Khe Su village at the foot of Bach Ma Mountain. Khe Su is home to around 50 households whose main income is derived from the fruit and vegetables they grow in their cottage gardens. A huge variety of crops are cultivated including cassava, sugar cane, tea, bananas, pineapple, mango, coconuts and jackfruit. Characteristic features of the Vietnamese countryside like lotus ponds, pigsties and stacks of rice stalks can also be seen. The Rhododendron trail: The spectacular view from the top of this magnificent waterfall is a highlight of a visit to Bach Ma. This trail begins at the summit road about 2 km below the guesthouses near the summit and passes through the sub-tropical forests of the high mountain to the top of waterfall. A steep path with 689 steps (!) of concrete stairs leads to the bottom of the cliff covering an altitude difference of about 300 m. The water from here flows into Perfume River in Hue. Back to Hue on the same day.
