About this activity
Morning at 7am pick up from your Hotel or your desired location in Hyderabad and leave for a Full-Day guided excursion to the Nagarjunakonda Island Museum which is 3 hrs drive from Hyderabad.
Reach Nagarjuna Sagar Dam by 10am. A feeling of awe and insignificance overcomes you when you lay eyes upon the Nagarjunasagar Dam for the first time. Its sheer size and magnitude leaves you breathless and astounded. As the tallest and largest masonry dam in the world, it truly stands as one of the wonders of engineering excellence.
Board your ferry from Nagarjuna Sagar Dam that will take you to the island. Reaching the museum would take around 45 minutes, which you can spend enjoying the beautiful island around.
Upon reaching the Island visit the Museum that features the remains of first Buddhist civilization from 3rd century AD. The remains are brilliantly preserved with the museum. Legend has it that this region was a significant Buddhist site and many Buddhists lived here. The aim of building a museum at this site is to collect and showcase pieces from the past, and to introduce the life and lifestyle of Buddhism relevant here.
The museum has been named after the founder of Mahayana Buddhism, Nagarjuna. The structure of the museum resembles that of a Buddhist Vihara, giving it an elegant and spiritual aura. The major attraction of this museum is the monolithic statue of Lord Buddha, which is large, tall and it emanates peace and poise. Apart from this exquisite sculpture, there are several sandal stone sculptures and carved slabs that depict the life of Buddha. The museum even has a tooth and an earring which are believed to be of Buddha himself.
Take your ferry back to Nagarjuna Sagar Dam and enjoy your lunch at a local restaurant (own expense).
Around 3pm Your tour ends and you drive back to Hyderabad and drop-off by 6pm approx to your hotel or other desired location in Hyderabad.
