Jaipur is the proud owner of the best preserved and also the biggest of the 5 observatories built throughout the country by Raja Sawai Jai Singh. At first sight it appears to be consisting of weird geometrical figures, built in stone and marble, lying in an open area. But a careful observation will give you an idea of their significance and also allow you to appreciate the genius of Sawai Jai Singh.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Amber Fort, Devisinghpura, Amer, Jaipur 302001 India
At a distance of 11 km from Jaipur, on the mighty Aravallis stands the sprawling Amber fort palace. Raja Man Singh started its construction in late 16th century. Few additions were made by subsequent rulers. This palace built mainly in red sandstone and marble is an excellent example of fusion of Hindu and Muslim style of architecture. The strong exterior of the fort symbolizes the might of the Rajputs while the delicate interiors (the fine lattice windows, frescos, finely sculptured pillars) speak about their refined taste.
In front of the fort was the 'mawatha' lake, which sheltered the crocodiles to protect the fort. In the midst of the lake area lies the Mughal style saffron garden. In the fort, the 'Diwan-i-am, the Diwan-i-khas and the 'Sheesh Mahal' with exquisite mirror work catch attention. The technical water cascade cooling system and the sandalwood door in the Sukh Mahal are very appealing. Besides, the Kali Temple is also worth paying a visit.

Dating back to 1899, this is the illustrious marble cenotaph of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II that was built by his son Maharaja Sardar Singh. It lies to the left on the way down from the Meherangarh fort. The main memorial is built like a temple. The fine lattice work in marble over the windows and intricately carved doors are what catch the attention of visitors. Day 4: Drive from Jodhpur to Udaipur

This biggest Jain temple in the country was built in 1439 in the reign of Maharana Kumbha and is dedicated to Adinath (first Jain Tirthankar or prophet) whose four faced image occupies the main sanctum. It has 29 halls and 1444 profusely carved pillars. No two pillars are alike and they are placed so well that by standing beside any of these you can view images of Tirthankars in all four directions. Its richly carved interior stands in sharp contrast to its simple exterior signifying that Jainism abstains from outward pomp and show. In the same complex are two more temples - one dedicated to Neminath and Parsvanath and other to the Sun God.

On the eastern bank of Lake Pichola, stands the lofty City Palace of Udaipur. Although constructed by 22 different Maharanas between the 16th and 20th centuries the uniformity in its design is remarkable. Quite a portion of it is now transformed into museums and heritage hotels. The approach is through the Tripolia Gate - a spot where the rulers were weighed against gold and silver and the value of it was distributed in the public.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Jagdish Temple, RJ State Highway 50, Udaipur 313001 India
Just north to the city palace this 17th century temple has a huge black stone idol of Lord Vishnu. Outside the main temple, right opposite to the idol stands his vehicle garuda, a mythical bird. Usually in the afternoon one can find group of ladies singing devotional songs on the beats of dholak (Indian version of drum) and manjira. Outside the temple there are plenty of handicraft shops lining the street.
