Day 4: Moholoholo and Game Drive

After breakfast, we drive to Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre for orphaned and injured animals. The animals at the centre are in enclosed pens and have been rehabilitated but are not yet able to be released into the wild as they are incapable of fending for themselves.

They serve a good purpose insofar as tourists can see that the project has successfully rehabilitated an animal that was destined to otherwise die - these animals arrive at Moholoholo as the result of being orphaned, poisoned, caught in poachers’ snares etc.

By visiting the centre we are supporting the important conservation work they do.

I will start with the negatives. The initial transfer for JNB is too rushed - we had barely ten minutes to change etc, after arriving at the lodge before going on the night drive. The room at the lodge had an air conditioner but no controller. The rushed nature of our arrival meant we did not spot this. The office was closed when we got back from the drive - so, I could not get one. The windows are not barred - against monkeys or netted against mosquitoes - so we spent a sleepless night in an "oven". Our tree house was not in a tree - very few of the rooms are. However, this is an advantage as the tree houses do not have en suite facilities but the other rooms do. Food was very good - with vegetarians catered for - but there was no choice. This was not a problem to us but could be if you are at all fussy about what you eat. That said, the trip was very enjoyable and represents good value for money. The guides (especially Tom) were very knowledgeable and all of the drives were excellent. We saw the big five - with seeing leopards on the night safari and the family of hyenas chilling out on their den the next day - probably the highlights!
