Soweto is considered the biggest townships in South Africa. 40% of Johannesburg residents live in Soweto. The South African census puts its population at 1,3 million in 2008. Nelson Mandela lived in Soweto from 1946 until 1961.

 

Hector Pieterson Museum –The Hector Pieterson museum situated in Soweto, commemorates the role of the country’s students in the struggle against apartheid. The commemorative site is just a few blocks from where 12 year old Hector Pieterson was shot in 1967.

 

Vilkazi Street-

Vilikazi Street is the Soweto street of the greats, named after Dr Benedict Wallet Vilakazi, a distinguished writer and educator who wrote the first poetry book published in Zulu. The homes of two Nobel Peace Price laureates- South Africa’s first democratically elected president the late Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu- are found on Vilakazi street. This is the only street in the world that can boost having had two Nobel Laureates as residents.

 

Mandela House Museum-

Mandela house is the house where Nelson Mandela lived until he was forced underground in 1961. It is located on corner of Vilakazi and Ngakabe street. He moved there in 1946. In 1999 it was declared a national heritage site.

 

Freedom Square- 

On 26 June 1955 the Congress of the people consisting of people of all races met on the freedom square to draw up the freedom chater. The freedom chater calls for democracy and human rights, equality of race and language, land reforms,labour rights and nationalization.

 

Regina Mundi Catholic Church-

Is located in the township of Soweto in the suburb of Moroka. The church forms part of the rich history of Soweto and id the largest Catholic church in South Africa- able to set 2000 people with standing room for 5000.The church played a major role in the struggle for freedom. Regina Mundi is Latin for “Queen of the world” and is referenced to the virgin Mary. The official opening of the church on the 24 July 1962 was presided over by Johannes Baptista Motini , a cardinal of Milan. During the era of apartheid the church opened its doors to anti-apartheid groups and provided shelter to activists. The church was often referred to as “the peoples church” or “the peoples cathedral” During the 1976 student uprising in Soweto many protesting students fled to the church to escape the police bullets and teargas canisters. The police followed the students into the church firing live ammunition and damaging the marble altar and crucifix. These bullets holes can still be seen today..
