Itinerary
First we will bike to Nishi Honganji Temple which is the largest Buddhist temple in southern Kyushu. From there we will go to Saigo Takamori's monument. He is considered the last true samurai and a historical figure in Japan. It's a short bike ride to Jimesa's memorial. She was the wife of the 18th lord of Satsuma.We continue along Culture Road and will stop at the wall ruins of Tsurumaru castle and mote. It is especially beautiful in the summer when the lotuses are in full bloom. Then we will bike to the Satsuma Retainer's memorial and learn a little bit about the history of Kagoshima. Our last stop is Nanshu Shrine where the tombs of Saigo Takamori and many of his followers are kept. This shrine is on a hillside so you can see panoramic views of the city and active volcano Mt. Sakurajima. From here we will bike back to the starting point. At each location a fun quiz is held. The person with the most correct answers can win a local Kagoshima sweet.
