Lava Expedition from Kona & Waikoloa

1 day
About this activity
Not for the faint of heart, this tour takes you out to the most current active eruption site. While active red flowing lava cannot be guaranteed, our National Park Service certified guides will lead a several mile hike across the lava flows looking for outbreaks and skylights. First, travel to Saddle Road between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea Volcanoes on your way over to Hilo, where w make a quick stop for provisions before heading to the Puna district and the Kilauea Volcano for your Lava Expedition hike. There is nothing quite as spectacular as seeing red molten lava, and nobody takes you to where the action is quite like us! Join us as we take you on a thrilling discovery of Kilauea Volcano. Enjoy a delicious picnic-style lunch. Well, drive as close as we safely can before setting off on foot to find the most recent surface outbreaks and ocean entries. The hike is approximately 2 miles each way from our private parking location. Watch as the black, smoking landscape changes right before your eyes. We will hike out to view any current skylights in the lava tube system and explore any possible surface flows. After our Lava Hike, we visit a winery for a wine and tea tour before your BBQ dinner. After dinner, we enter the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to view the current eruption activity at the Jaggar Museum. Please wear sturdy closed-toe shoes as slippers, sandals and flip-flops will not be accepted.
