About this activity
Ancient Hawaiians viewed water as the essence of life. In the past, the ahupua’a, a Native Hawaiian sustainable system, worked because everyone had a clear understanding of their kuleana or one’s responsibilities. The ahupua’a consisted of a slice of land like a piece of pie, that runs from the top of the mountains down to the sea, often following the boundary of a stream. Early Hawaiians depended on one another and shared the fruits of their labor with one another. Na Waiwai – Hawaiian values were the building blocks that best described their behavior. This exceptional tour provides a first-hand experience of early Polynesian life.
After a quick check-in at Holo Holo Charters in historic Port Allen, we will transport you through a private entrance in Kalaheo to the National Tropical Botanical Gardens for an unsurpassed look at one of the largest collections of native Hawaiian flora in existence. Ride along a winding back road that overlooks an exquisite emerald-green valley, clothed with close to 15,000 living native Hawaiian plants.
Countless photo opportunities await you while you walk along a short hiking trail through a lush tropical garden that eventually makes it way to a gentle waterfall.
Enjoy a tasting of some canoe plants in a local snack form while sitting amongst Hale Ho’ona’auau, a traditional Hawaiian home that was constructed from materials completely harvested within the McBryde Garden and built by hand according to the Hawaiian customs.
Feel Kaua’i’s gentle breezes caress you as you relax and unwind watching a private hula show by award winning Hula Halau Ka Lei Mokihana o Leina’ala.
Learn about the hokule’a, or star compass, that was used to navigate the seas by the early Polynesian voyagers on a guided tour through a canoe garden. Find out how the star compass was used to read the flight path of birds and the direction of the waves. Discover what canoe plants these early Polynesians brought with them over 500 years ago when they settled in their new land.
You will be transported back to Port Allen to end the rest of your afternoon with a Hawaiian-Style Sunset Dinner Sail along Poipu’s sunny south shore. Feel Kaua’i’s aloha as you listen to traditional Hawaiian voyaging music while taking in breathtaking views of the Lawa’i Kai Ahupua’a from the water. Sample authentic Hawaiian poi while savoring the delicious island flavors of a local-style buffet. Unwind with a traditional Koloa Rum Mai Tai as you witness the sun gently setting into the sea.
