About this activity
Visit: Acropolis Museum, Dionysiou Areopagitou 15, Athens 117 42 Greece

Navigate in Greek history through the galleries of the Slopes of the Acropolis, the Archaic Acropolis, the Parthenon, Propylaia, Athena Nike, Erechtheion and the exhibition from the 5th c. BC to the 5th c. AD.

The Gallery of the Slopes of the Acropolis houses finds from the sanctuaries that were founded on the slopes of the Acropolis, as well as objects that Athenians used in everyday life from all historic periods. On the left hand side, finds from some of the key sanctuaries of the slopes are exhibited. On the right hand side, finds from the smaller sanctuaries and settlements that developed on the slopes of the Hill are displayed. In antiquity, the slopes of the Sacred Rock constituted the transition zone between the city and its most famous sanctuary. This was the area where official and popular cults, as well as large and small sanctuaries existed alongside private houses.

In the Archaic Acropolis Gallery, for the first time, visitors have the opportunity to view exhibits from all sides as three-dimensional exhibits. With the benefit of the changing natural light, visitors can discern and discover the delicate surface variations of sculptures and select the vantage point from which to observe the exhibits. In the south side of the Gallery, depictions of young women (the Korai), the horse riders (the Hippeis) and many other provide a striking picture of the Acropolis in the Archaic Period.

The last gallery of the Museum, affords views of unique works that became prototypes for subsequent periods from antiquity to today. For the first time ever, it is possible to view the coffered ceiling of the Propylaia and the sculptures from the parapet of the temple of Athena Nike, and finally, the Caryatids – or Korai of the Erechtheion at close proximity on the balcony overlooking the Gallery of the Slopes of the Acropolis. The main monuments that constitute the Classical Acropolis are the Propylaia, the temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion.

Reliefs of Athenian decrees, impressive portraits, Roman copies of classical masterpieces and depictions of philosophers and historical figures are the exhibits covering the period from the 5th century BC to the 5th century AD. These collections of the Museum include the Sanctuary of Artemis Brauronia, the votives of the Classical and Hellenistic Periods and the votives of the Roman Period.

The Acropolis Museum provides a restaurant on the second floor, with panoramic views of the Acropolis and a 700 square meter public terrace commanding a breathtaking view of the historic hills of Athens. Among other facilities, the Museum offers a Reading Lounge on the second floor with views of the Caryatids and the Hekatompedos Pediment where visitors can relax on comfortable chairs and browse through books on the Acropolis and the classical world.

Best tip ever to pre purchase ‘skip the line’ tickets. No waiting went straight through. Outstanding museum.

I am a bit frustrated in that I paid for skip the line tickets and the museum was free that day. I think Viator tour should have known that when I put in the dates for our visit. The museum itself was amazing!

The museum is a wonderful experience, and something to see. The skip line tickets worked like a charm, and it was easy to locate the ticket pick up location. It was definitely enjoyable on a self guided basis. Make sure to look down as you enter, and walk around the first floor of the museum. It is glass, and looks down into some really interesting ruins.

I had made a booking for the 30th May but unfortunately my flight arrived late and I could not get to the museum on time. The next day I told them this and asked if they would honour the booking, of course they wouldn't and I paid again. This means they got paid by Viator and by myself so paid twice. A big waste of money as the museum only contains Acropolis statues or copies of those in the British Museum. Go to the Benaki Museum, it is far more interesting and diverse and covers many subjects.

We went in the early afternoon, there wasn't a line anywhere, so I'm not sure if there was a need to even purchase this. The museum was interesting and modern and a good place to get exposed to history without the hurried pace of a tour guide, if thats what you prefer.

This is just for the museum - you'll need to pay onsite to visit the ruins about 30 euro per person.

This may have been more helpful in high tourist season. There weren't lines. The museum is terrific we saw it after a Segway tour around the Acropolis, the day before we actually went up to the Acropolis, and I think we really understood what we were seeing. Lunch at the museum was good as well.
