Stop At: Acropolis, via Dionysiou Areopagitou str., Athens 105 58 Greece

Board our vehicle and set off on a 40-minute drive through Athens. Meet your guide and climb up the 80 steep steps through the Propylaea, the monumental gateway that extends 150 feet across the Acropolis’s western side. Its size ensured that a horse and chariot could easily pass through.

As your tour commences, take in the wonders of these ancient ruins, and fill your camera with extraordinary family pictures in front of the iconic landmarks. On the highest point of the Acropolis stands the Parthenon, one of the greatest monuments of ancient civilization and a perfect representation of Doric-style architecture. Have the kids count the sections that make up a Doric column and look for a slab of marble that they are permitted to touch.

Continue on to the north side of the Acropolis to see the Erectheion. This sacred site is where it was once decided which god would rule the city. Be sure to tell the kids the story of how when Poseidon thrust his trident into the ground, water burst forth, but when Athena touched the ground with her spear and an olive tree grew, so she was named ruler of the city. On the south side of the building, discover the Porch of the Caryatids, or Porch of the Maidens. Notice how these graceful sculptures are engineered to support the weight of the roof on the slender neck of each female figure. Legend tells that when Lord Elgin removed one of the original statues to decorate his Scottish mansion the remaining stone maidens could be heard crying in the night.

Stop At: Panathenaic Stadium, Leof. Vasileos Konstantinou, Athina 116 35, Greece

At the conclusion of your tour, take a little time to explore independently, then re-board the vehicle and set off for a photo stop at the Old Olympic Stadium. The kids will enjoy mugging for the camera in front of this historic stadium that was used as the venue for the marathon finish as well as the archery competition in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Having worked up an appetite, and lunch will be served at the internationally famous Hard Rock Café. This rock ‘n’ roll themed restaurant displays its iconic music memorabilia from contemporary and legendary musicians from around the world. The high- energy establishment sells traditional American fare and handcrafted drinks. Refreshed, settle back into the vehicle and a scenic drive on your return to port that takes in all the highlights of Athens. Your informative, narrated drive will take you past a wealth of important sites, the perfect conclusion to this historical day.
