Insider's Nafplion: Favorite Foods, Traditions and Ouzo
1 day
About this activity
Our journey to the romantic seaport town of Nafplion passes by the historic Corinth Canal and the scenic Peloponnese countryside. Upon arrival in Nafplion, we stop at a local bakery to sample Greece’s irresistible sweet or savory phyllo pastries with a coffee or beverage.
We continue our journey to the Palamidi Fortress, built by the Venetians in 1714, where we admire the spectacular view of Nafplion and the Argolic Gulf. After a leisurely walk, we drive to the historic port where we view Bourtzi fortress on an islet in the harbor. We roam the cobblestone alleys in the medieval old town passing historic Syntagma Square, the 18th century Archeological Museum and Vouleftiko Mosque. Our walk culminates at one of Nafplion’s favorite restaurants by the harbor serving a wide variety of mediterranean fare. We try an assortment of traditional Greek dishes including drunken mussels, grilled swordfish kebab, oyster mushrooms, roast peppers with feta, veal with prunes. After lunch, we have the choice of free time to visit shops and museums or dessert on “Loukoumades”, Greek honey balls, or homemade ice cream.
Our last stop is the Karonis Distillery Exhibition and Shop, a business established in 1869, and where we learn about the distillation process of their ouzo (tsipouro), brandy and liqueurs. We have the opportunity to sample their products as well. We travel back to Athens to arrive early evening.
