Magical Meteora: 2-Day Food, Wine and Truffles tour

About this activity
We leave from Athens this morning for our scenic 4-hour drive to the hillside town of Meteora with stops along the way including coffee at a seaside cafe. Our 1st culinary experience is a talk about Greek traditional cuisine and regional specialities, followed by lunch.
We depart for our exploration of the fabled Meteora monasteries (Grand Meteora, Varlaam, St. Stephan), perched high on the cliffs above the town. Each monastery has its own personality. We pause to take in the solitude and view the artistic treasures. The monasteries have strict dress codes so women will need to wear a long skirt. However, if you forget, the monasteries have wrap skirts at entrances to borrow.
This evening enjoy a special welcome dinner in the village of Kalambaka. Our restaurant serves specialties of the region: goat stew with seasoned vegetables, souzoukaki (meatballs in tomato sauce), briam (oven roasted eggplant, zucchini, green peppers, tomatoes and herbs). Overnight at Meteora Hotel or similar.
The next morning we enjoy a buffet breakfast at the hotel, then depart for the Natural History Museum. We explore the exhibits then assemble for our truffle hunting expedition. We meet our guide and witness as the specially trained dog sniffs out these favorite delicacies. Our guide collects the truffles and prepares a special lunch for us. Note: if truffle hunting is not available we'll visit the Natural History and Mushroom Museum with a tasting of the museum's mushroom products, followed by a picnic lunch at the winery.
This afternoon we continue to a family-owned winery. The whole thirty acres of privately owned vineyards are located in a slope across mount Meteora. The first ten acres were re-vined in 1976 by a wine-lover/priest, with the Muscat Hamburg variety that has a strong connection with the region’s vinicultural history. Here we learn about their winemaking operation and varietals, then relax by a brook in the shade of Sycamore trees to sample some fine wines alongside local cheeses. After our tasting, we head home to Athens.
