Pass By: Plaka, Athens, Attica
Ancient Greek civilization was a supernova for its time. Art, poetry, philosophy, rhetoric, science… ancient Greeks have handed down to us so many principles and concepts. Since the setting of the ancient World, numerous studies have followed the footprints of this civilization through its rich heritage. But… have you never wondered what ancient Greeks were like in their private lives? How did Perikles, Praxitelis, even the poorest of the commoners in Athens make love?
The ancient World saw life, love and human values in a completely different light. Not only did it not hide nudity, but glorified the beauty of the human body through its unique art. During our walk, we will discover beautiful neighbourhoods of Athens, like Thiseio, Plaka and Anafiotika, and we will admire from afar some of the most important sites such as the Acropolis, the Roman Agora, the Hill of the Nymphs, and the ancient cemetery of Kerameikos.
Walking past the “living” proof of ancient Greeks’ greatness, we will be exposed to stimuli that will generate vivid discussions on several aspects of their private lives. What were the passions of the ancient Gods? How did ancient Greek society regard marriage and family? What were the expected behavioural patterns for men and women? Was there paid love in the streets of Athens? What was the case of erastai (lovers) and what did “appropriate” and “latent” love mean? Let us be a bit… indiscreet… let us snoop into their private rooms and come closer to the grandeur of virtue, as they perceived it.
