Stop At: Gregory Lake, Nuwara Eliya Sri Lanka

Gregory Lake was created in 1873 by the British era Governor at the time, Sir William Gregory, supposedly for the purpose of providing electricity. However the lake was mainly used for leisure and recreation after it was built. At its peak of fame, Gregory Lake was the most prominent attraction in the area and was used a place to relax by many visitors.

Gregory Lake in Sri Lanka: The lake today
Recently the hilly district of Nuwara Eliya received a complete facelift by the government. With these renovations, the Gregory Lake area, which is located right in the center of the Nuwara Eliya town, has been converted into a sort of Lake Park with many recreational activities.

Now visitors can follow the ancient British era tradition of relaxing picnics on the shore of the lake, or more modern leisure activities such as rides in swan shaped paddle boats, normal boatrides, pony rides along the shore, water walking balls, watersports such as jetskis, windsurfing and etc. As such with these many attractions Gregory Lake is a family friendly historic location of SriLanka, attracting many holiday makers who visit the country.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Victoria Park of Nuwara Eliya, A5, Nuwara Eliya 22200 Sri Lanka

The Victoria Park is a public park located in Nuwara Eliya, next to the Nuwara Eliya Post Office in Sri Lanka.

Originally the park was the research field of Hakgala Botanical Garden. The park was formally named in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. The park was established with the planting of its first tree, an Oak, by a visiting German Princess. The Nanu Oya River runs through the park, creating a number of small lakes. A number of rare bird species can be found in the park. At the far end of the park is a small children’s playground and miniature ridable railway.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Ramboda Waterfall, Pussellawa Sri Lanka

Ramboda Falls in Sri Lanka: The Most Beautiful Waterfalls of Sri Lanka
Rivers, as they flow over uneven ground or down mountains, often split into tributaries or form waterfalls. Sometimes two tributaries of the same river may form twin waterfalls very close to each other as the water spills down cliffs and rocks. However, it is quite uncommon for the tributaries to combine after forming the waterfalls making a Y shape.

This unique and beautiful sight can be seen at the Pussellawa area of Nuwara Eliya, at the Ramboda Pass. The Ramboda Falls in Sri Lanka or Ramboda Ella or Puna Ella as these falls are called is created from Puna Oya, a tributary of Kothmale Oya. It makes a twin with Dunsinane Falls which is created by Pundalu Oya, also a tributary of Kothmale River, and combines at the base to form a Y shape.

Ramboda Falls in Sri Lanka: Insights
Details about Ramboda Falls in Sri Lanka

Height : 109 m
Ranking in Sri Lanka : 11th Tallest
Ranking in World : 729th Tallest
Location : A5 Highway, Ramboda Pass, Pussellawa area, Nuwara Eliya
Height from Sea Level : 945m
Water Volume : During normal periods of the year Dunsinane Falls which falls on the right receives more volume of water than Ramboda falls. However during periods of drought the role is reversed as Dunsinane Falls, whose tributary passes through farming lands before falling, has less water coming through compared to Ramboda Falls whose tributary passes through a forest reserve. In this case, instead of Ramboda Falls having more water it is more due to Dunsinane receiving less water while Ramboda remains the same.

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Stop At: Loolkandura, Deltota-Rikillagaskada Road, Rikillagaskada 20730 Sri Lanka

En-route visit the Ramboda Falls and Blue Field Tea Factory where you would see how the world’s famous “Ceylon Tea” is manufactured. Expected travel time is 1-1.5 hours.
In 1824 a tea plant was brought to Ceylon by the British from China and was planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya for non-commercial purposes. James Taylor was a British citizen who introduced commercial tea plantation in Sri Lanka (Ceylon). He arrived to Sri Lanka in 1852 and settled down in Loolecondera estate in Kandy. Today even people who have never heard of Sri Lanka are familiar with Ceylon tea, which is known for its quality. Later that evening leave from the tea factory by approximately 5pm and return back to the hotel completing your excursion by 7:30pm

The driver turned up late. We had to call him to find out where he was. Then they had not booked the train tickets in the first class carriage. Then he stuff around for another half hour before we worked out with him to go the reverse of the itinerary and do the car trip first and then the train from Nuwara Eliya. We did the tea houses on the way up. On the return we were supposed to get on the first class carriage. It took a lots of stress waiting around the station before we had a seat confirmed. We finally got our seats, but had to meet the drive one station before Kandy. Not a good trip for a nice part of the word.

The tour guide Gayan was fantastic, he knew lots of information and made us feel very comfortable. The tea factory and Ramboda falls were great experiences. The train ride had some fantastic views, but four hours was very long. I think I would have preferred to get the train from Nuwara Eliya, to one of the stops along the way to Kandy and complete the journey by car.

Great day trip although it was raining heavily almost all day ... excellent effort on the part of the guide as the morning train was cancelled ... he got us tickets for a similar afternoon return trip instead ... the train travelling over the plantations and gorges is spectacular.
