Nepal popular among tourists as the trek destination also has ample opportunities for hunting in sub-tropical jungles of Terai plains. Hunting in Nepal can only be done at the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve where a licensed hunting is allowed. Though hunting is contradictory in the this ecological awakening age, Nepal has been the favored ground for hunters since 9th century and controlled hunting is allowed with proper license and at the certain seasons of the year. Hunting licenses is usually issued by the Department of National Park and Wildlife Conservation in Kathmandu. Hunting parties either trek or fly (helicopter) to the high terrain areas in search for Himalayan Thar or Blue Sheep. At the mid-elevations, you can find wild goat and sheep; in the Terai lowlands deer are found. Only the designated areas are permitted for hunting in Nepal where a licensed guide must accompany the hunting parties. Once such is the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve located in the western Nepal. The prime habitats of the reserve is blue sheep, a highly prized trophy animal, which is the main target of hunters and also other animals like Ghoral, Serow, Himalayan Tahr, Black Bear Pheasant and Partridge. Endangered species of the area include the red panda and cheer pheasant. Endangered animals in the reserve are musk deer, wolf red panda, cheer pheasant and Daphne. Beni which is 72 km from Pokhara is the gateway to Dhorpatan. Good time to visit the reserve is from September to May.
