Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali – Rwanda (Pick up at airport)

Stop At: Kigali Genocide Memorial, KG 14 Ave, Kigali Rwanda
Airport pickup and transfer to your Hotel in Kigali. Early arrivals can take optional tour of Kigali city including Kimironko market and the Genocide memorials and the surrounding areas. Overnight and Dinner at Des Milles Collines Hotel.

Day 2: Transfer to Bukavu- DR Congo

Stop At: National Museum of Rwanda, RN1/Road to Nyanza The museum actually is situated in the town of Nyanza, Butare Rwanda
In the morning, you will be picked by the driver from your hotel in Kigali and drive southwards to Cyangugu boarder on the way to Bukavu in DR Congo. You will have a stop over in Butare, where you will visit the national museum of Rwanda, the king’s palace in Nyanza, and the Rwanda genocide memorial site. After lunch, continue on a scenic journey to Bukavu with wonderful views of the hills in Rwanda through the tropical forest of Nyungwe National park and a clear view of Lake Kivu.

Day 3: Lowland Gorilla tracking tour in Kahuzi Biega – DR Congo

Stop At: Kahuzi-Biega National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo
In the morning you will continue the 10 days Kigali Kahuzi Biega and Virunga safari and you will head for the memorable adventure of tracking the lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National park. Tracking lowland Gorillas is very amazing, lowland Gorillas differ from the mountain gorillas, the lowland gorillas are bigger in size, usually takes 1-4 hours tracking the lowland Gorillas. The lowland Gorillas stay in bigger families as compared to mountain gorillas; you will not regret the safari effort once you meet the amazing Gorillas! Later in the afternoon drive back to your hotel.

Day 4: Transfer to Goma

Pass By: ihusi building, Boulevard Kanyamuhanga, Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo
In the morning you will take a boat from Bukavu to Goma which takes 3-5 hours. Upon arrival in Goma transfer to your hotel for rest and overnight at the Hotel. In the afternoon Goma city tour and return to the hotel.

Day 5: Check in and Transfer to Mikeno Lodge

Stop At: Virunga National Park, Goma Democratic Republic of the Congo
Arrival at Grande Barriere border crossing by 10:30am and ensure check in with Virunga tourism office by 11:15am. The tourism office is conveniently located in the Grande Barriere border post building, opposite passport control. Tourism staff will provide guests with gorilla and volcano trek permits at check-in. These permits must be presented before the start of each trek. Once check-in is complete, guests will be transported to Mikeno Lodge at the Park headquarters in Rumangabo. On arrival to Mikeno Lodge, a late lunch will be served and the afternoon can be enjoyed at leisure, including exploring Rumangabo’s several nature trails, bird watching or paying a visit to Virunga’s Congo hounds.

Day 6: First Gorilla trek in Bukima

Stop At: Virunga National Park, Goma Democratic Republic of the Congo
Guests shall have early breakfast and will set off for the first gorilla trek at Bukima Ranger Post. When the trekkers reach Bukima post, trekkers will meet their Ranger guides and local pisteurs to receive a briefing before starting the gorilla trek. The gorilla treks usually take about 3 hours of hiking each way and the depend on the location of the gorilla group being trekked and the difficulty of the terrain. When the guests meet the mountain gorillas, they will spend at least 1 hour observing and taking photos and later they shall return to Bukima camp where a late lunch will be served. Guests will have the rest of the afternoon off to explore Bukima including bird watching and visiting the Park’s bamboo project.

Day 7: Second Gorilla trek in Bukima

Stop At: Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo
At 8:30am, guests will start their second gorilla trek. When they return, a quick lunch will be served at Bukima and when all gorilla trekkers have returned, guests will be transported back to Mikeno Lodge. When the guests reach the lodge, they will have their afternoon at own leisure, free to explore the Park HQ or cosy up with a nice book by the fire.

Day 8: Relax and exploration of surroundings of Mikeno Lodge

Stop At: Virunga National Park, Democratic Republic of the Congo
This is a day to relax, explore and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Mikeno Lodge.
Duration: 5 hours

Accommodation included: Overnight at Mikeno Lodge

Day 9: Nyiragongo volcano hike

Stop At: Mount Nyiragongo, 21 Gm, Goma Democratic Republic of the Congo
Guests wake up early morning, take breakfast and will be transported to the Kibati Ranger Post which is the departure point for the Nyiragongo volcano trek. When the trekkers reach Kibati, climbers will receive a briefing and will have the opportunity to hire porters who help them carry their luggage. The climb up the volcano takes around four to six hours and trekkers will overnight on the summit.

Accommodation included: Overnight in Wooden Shelter at the summit of Nyiragongo

Day 10: Descent of Nyiragongo and the end of the trip

Pass By: Ihusi Hotel, 140 Boulevard Kanyamuhanga, Goma, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Early in the morning, climbers will leave the crater rim and start the descent back to Kibati. Average descent time is four hours. Once at the bottom, guests will be transported back to Goma town with drop-off at the Grande Barriere border crossing.
