About this activity
The ghost tour is 1-hour long starting upstairs in Lanigans Bar and Restaurant at 8pm. Each tour will be guide by one of the characters (The Witch, Dr Death, Highwayman, Priest Hunter, the Monk or the Banshee).

The tour takes you through the haunted streets of the oldest medieval city in Ireland. Starting with the curse of Sir Richard Shee along St. Marys Lane to St. Marys Church and graveyard. You will experience the first ever witch trial of the notorious Dame Alice Ketyler along with her accomplices, Petronilla and Basilia and her imp, or evil spirit, called Robin Artisson, to whom, in order to make the infernal thing obedient to all their commands, they sacrificed nine red cocks in the middle of the highway, and offered up the eyes of nine peacocks.

If that’s not enough to spook even the bravest souls the tour takes us from the ghostly Kilkenny prison via Rothe house to the mysteries Black Abbey with its open stone tombs and up Black mill street St Marys Cathedral.

As you make your way up chapel lane your will experience the ghostly presence of the highwayman, James Freney, the Irish Robin hood, the monk and the Dr. Death. Arriving at Kilkenny Castle visitors like those before them may encounter the white lady or even hear the screams of the Banshee herself.

Arriving at the famous Johns Bridge visitors’ may see some of the ghostly shapes of the 16 people who fell into the river Nore when the bridge collapsed in 1763.

Very interesting tour for history buffs. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and he did an excellent job without a script in front of him. It's fun to hear some of the local stories. However, the tour is a long walk, which is fine for me, but part of our group was a senior, and the walk has quite a bit of backtracking, up and down hill, and it probably was around a mile and a half total. Basically, expect to have to walk a lot, and you should have a good time.

We had a great time and learned a lot about Kilkenny!!! Our Guide, and forgive me, I forget his name, but he is the one whose hand vibrates when he feels the presence of ghosts was very sweet and enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I enjoyed the tour, but to be fair, I love ghosts and spirits, having grown up with one in my own household. I also love History and learning about the places I visit. For those who are just curious or looking for a spooky experience, it was not at all scary and was a bit long... I might suggest that the information and stories could be a little less drawn out more compacted perhaps... I noticed several folks lost interest and were literally fidgeting, yawning and glazing over my friend included. The walk took longer than expected and the capes and hats - while a fun idea - smelled badly like mold or body odor, so that was distracting. Other than that, it was a Super history lesson and a wonderful nighttime sight seeing tour of Kilkenny! The Certificates and Quiz are a nice touch and make a great memento of the evening. Over all I really enjoyed it.
