Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum Trip from Krakow
1 day
About this activity
Your driver will collect you from your Krakow hotel between 8am and 9am. It's generally about a 90-minute drive to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum.
You'll start at Auschwitz I, the first camp to be built on the site, where you'll join an English-language tour provided by the museum. Begin by watching a documentary movie about the history of Nazi concentration camps in German-occupied Poland before exploring the site with your guide. Many of the original buildings here have been converted into powerful and moving museums.
Next, stay with your group for the transfer to Auschwitz II-Birkenau, about 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) away, where around a million people were killed, more than 90% of them Jews. Much of the camp was demolished, but you'll see the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria where so many went to their deaths. You'll spend about an hour here with the same guide before returning to the main gate.
Here you'll rejoin your driver and board your van for the transfer back to Krakow. You should be back at your hotel between 3:30pm and 4:30pm. Please note that bad traffic can create delays.

The pick up and drop off was great and on time. The driver, sorry forgot his name, was extremely helpful and courteous. The guide Joanne was great as well, very well spoken and always with a great respect to the killed there. The only unfortunate thing was, Polish government trying to rewrite history. To the people of my generation it is very offensive and unforgivable.
Picked up on time , it was well organised , cannot fault it, would use again . We used same company for taxi pick up from airport , would use again .
Picked up on time...a very good guide for the tour. Excellent driver. The day was a somber one with prayers and tears.
Never book on this trip. Customer care is non existent i thought by booking Viator a Trip Advisor Company i would be guaranteed a good experience. NO definitely not a good experience and obviously according to them all our fault!!!
It's really difficult to put into words how the experience was at Auschwitz and Birkenau. It's something that I think everyone should understand and appreciate. It was completely unplanned but we booked to visit on the 78th anniversary since they were used as concentration camps. There were certain areas we were not able to go into, which was completely justified and we understood. It was nice to see the Polish army dressed and a commemoration for those lost in the times the camps were open, were remembered. Our guide, Margaret, was absolutely incredible, so knowledgeable and very honest about her feelings about the camps and what happened. I thought she made the trip a brilliant one and we'd recommend her highly. The feeling you get in the camp is indescribable, but I would suggest actually listening and taking in where you are rather than taking photographs every 2 seconds like some of our group did. Some parts were particularly difficult to see, such as children's items and some pictures, and hard to imagine the traumas the people kept there faced. It wasn't a 'nice' experience, but an interesting and important area of our history that everyone should see in their lifetime. Some recommendations I would make are: Don't take children. There was a young girl in our group who was too young to understand and you could tell she was bored. It's an immensely long walk so wear flat/comfortable shoes. We got a good experience and understanding but we were a bit rushed at the end as most of the group were then going on to the Salt Mine so they had to stick to a time frame. Fair enough but we'd have liked to ask our guide some more questions and take in the experience a bit more. Overall, an excellent tour to gain a small insight into such a big historical event.
Very good tour a little rushed now and then but worth it.
Very sobering day, everyone should visit this site. Guide was excellent and obviously very passionate about the place. Very good tour, well organised and value for money. Would not hesitate to recommend.
The local Krakow agency were excellent switched into English once they knew, picked me up and returned me to my apartment. They took all of the worry out of a stranger in a foreign country wishing to visit Auschwitz. Highly recommended. The Auschwitz experience was extraordinary and I'm still processing it!.
Amazing Tour, very emotive but throughly enjoyed the history and factual importance. Would definitely recommend A
