ABOUT AUSCHWITZ II BIRKENAU:
Auschwitz II Birkenau is a place, where over 1,1 million people lost their lives during the World War II. Although at the beginning it was supposed to be a camp for prisoners of war, soon it became a place of Jews’ extermination. As the war was about to end, Germans tried to destroy all evidences of their crimes. However, beside numerous reconstructions of camp buildings, there are still some original buildings in Birkenau (Auschwitz II Birkenau). The collection includes gas chambers, guard towers, wooden and brick barracks or crematoria. There is also an unloading ramp and warehouses that were used for sorting and shipping prisoners’ property. Today, all of these objects tell a terrifying story that we all should remember.
Due to the brutal character of the place, it is not recommended to visit Birkenau (Auschwitz II Birkenau) with children under 14 years old. Also, all visitors are required to behave appropriately and respectfully as they visit a place where mass exterminations took place.
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
Pass By: Tourist Information Center in Oswiecim, Stanisławy Leszczyńskiej 12, 32-600 Oświęcim, Poland
On our way back, we'll pass through Monowitz (Auschwitz III). It was a subcamp of Auschwitz, where prisoners were forced to do an extremely hard work at synthetic rubber fabric.
