Stop At: Angkor Wat, Siem Reap 17254 Cambodia
Enter the Angkor Wat temple in darkness from the western side, and soak up the atmosphere of dawn from the edge of one of the ancient library pools. Prepare your camera and wait for the world-famous sunrise. After watching the sunrise, enter the interior of the great temple and spend around two hours exploring the corridors full of carvings, central chambers, and upper terraces.
Duration: 2 hours
Stop At: Prasat Kravan, Siem Reap Cambodia
The temple was dedicated to Vishnu, according to an inscription on doorjambs. The bas-reliefs on the central tower are representations of Vishnu, while the northernmost tower features a pair of bas-reliefs of Lakshmi, Vishnu's wife.
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Banteay Kdei, Srah Srang Angkor, Siem Reap Cambodia
Built in the mid-12th during the reign of Jayavarman VII, it is in the Bayon architectural style, similar in plan to Ta Prohm and Preah Khan, but less complex and smaller. This Buddhist monastic complex is currently dilapidated due to faulty construction and poor quality of sandstone used in its buildings, and is now undergoing renovation.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Srah Srang, Siem Reap Cambodia
Srah Srang, measured 700m by 350m, is a reservoir dug in the mid-10th century. There may once be a temple standing on an artificial island in the middle of it, but now only a basement can be found.
Duration: 15 minutes
Stop At: Pre Rup, Siem Reap Cambodia
The temple's name is a modern one meaning "turn the body". This reflects the common belief among Cambodians that funerals were conducted at the temple, with the body ashes ritually rotated in different directions as the service progressed. Pre Rup's extensive laterite and brick give it a pleasing reddish tone in early morning and late afternoon sunlight.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Eastern Mebon, Angkor, Siem Reap Cambodia
This is a 10th Century temple, standing on an artificial island at the center of the East Baray reservoir (now dry). Four landing stages at the base suggests that the temple was once reached by boat.
Duration: 30 minutes
Stop At: Ta Som, Angkor Archaeological Park Cambodia
Like the nearby Preah Khan and Ta Prohm, the Ta Som temple was left largely unrestored, with numerous trees and other vegetation growing among the ruins. The eastern outer gopura has been overgrown by a sacred fig which has grown down through the blocks and into the ground.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Neak Pean, Angkor Wat, Siem Reap Cambodia
Neak Pean was originally designed for medical purposes (the ancients believed that going into these pools would balance the elements in the bather, thus curing disease). It is one of the many hospitals that Jayavarman VII built.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Preah Khan, Angkor Wat, Siem Reap Cambodia
Preah Khan (meaning "holy sword") was built in the 12th century for King Jayavarman VII to honor his father.
Duration: 1 hour
Stop At: Phnom Bakheng, 7 Makara Street, Wat Bo Village Salakamreuk Commune, Siem Reap Cambodia
Located atop a hill, Phnom Bakheng is the final stop of the tour where you wait for gorgeous sunset views. It is a Hindu and Buddhist temple in the form of a temple mountain. The large number of visitors also makes Phnom Bakheng one of the most threatened monuments of Angkor.
Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes
