About this activity
In the past glory of the Khmer empire where Angkor Wat stood as the centre of power in the Indochina region, there was a booming industry of blacksmithing, fueled by the never-ending wars as well as the need for tools to craft amazing carvings and sculptures to adorn the halls of Angkor.
While the stone continues to live on in the Angkor complex and still visited by hundreds of thousands, the tools of the trade are slowly becoming sidelined as most of them are being imported from locations such as China. A few blacksmiths in the region still do things the traditional way though, melting scrap metal with a charcoal fire fanned by a hand-powered wind machine and hammered into place with well-chiseled young men.
Come and enjoy an interesting day and try your hand at blacksmithing! Medieval knife making is an activity suitable for everyone to try, you can participate as much as you want (Dangerous parts will be taken over by your host), or if you feel tired you can always let your master host take over. You'll be able to see every stage of the knife making process from scrap metal to finished product.
At the end of the day you'll be proud of the fact that you have made your very own knife to bring home.
The venue will be at the actual blacksmith's workshop, a completely authentic experience you cannot get anywhere else. If you need transportation arranged please add it in the add-ons section.
Note: For safety, there will be certain parts of the workshop which will strictly be handled by the instructor only.
Dress Code: Long sleeves, sun glasses and covered shoes are recommended because of sparks and little debris. Dresses are not recommended. :)
