Phnom Kulen mean 'Lychee Mountain' or the original name is Mahendraparavata was found by Jayavarman II ( late 8th century- 9th century ).
Phnom Kulen is considered by Khmers to be most sacred mountain in Cambodia and is a popular place of pilgrimage during weekends and festivals. It played a significant role in the history of Khmer empire, as it was from here in AD 802 that Jayavarman II proclaimed himself a devaraja (god-king)and announced independence from Java. He made spectacularly carved riverbed as the 'River of a thousand Lingas' the male and female organ, the symbol Shiva and his consort Uma in order to make water from springs sacred.
Three main things you will see here are the waterfall, the river of a thousand Lingas and Reclining Buddha was carved on big rock in 16th century.
