About this activity
Aborigines or “Orang Asli” in the country consists of the Proto-Malay, Negritos and Senoi groups. In every group of the Orang Asli, they appoint a leader in which they are called ‘Batin’ – Village Chief or in Malay word - ‘Penghulu’.
At Carey Island they are the Mah Meri, a sub-group of the Senoi, which has a population of about 2,500 people. Well known for its craftsmanship which they won is the “Unesco Seal of Excellence” in wood carvings. The island of 100sq.km which is below sea-level is famous for its sea food. Fresh mud crabs from the mangrove swamps and fishes, prawns, clams etc. are served in most restaurants.
