About this activity
Dotty's home is located in the lush and tranquil Tumbak Bayuh, 20min from the famous Tanah Lot temple, amongst rice paddy fields that Bali is known for. Join Dotty in her kitchen and learn cook a simple Javanese meal, using local ingredients and recipes handed down from Dotty’s mother and grandmother. She might teach you to cook her addictively light and crispy corn fritters or another favorite, soya chicken, chicken cooked in soy sauce with traditional ingredients such as cinnamon, star anise, and rice wine. As you chop, grind and sauté, Dotty will teach you about the local cuisine and tell you stories about her family. Dotty is especially gifted at teaching you about substitutes for traditional ingredients that can be hard to find at your grocery store back home.
Tanah Lot Temple is 20min away from Dotty's home and is a great side trip before or after the experience. Dotty lives about 45min to 1hour from Kuta beach.

This was the highlight of my trip! I loved meeting Dotty and being welcomed into her home, and making some really amazing recipes. She is very accommodating to dietary restrictions and offers a lot of different choices of recipes to chose from. We made four really great recipes. It was so relaxing being in her home and getting the one on one attention! This is a must do for anyone coming to Bali!

This cooking class was one of my favorite parts of our vacation in Bali! I took this cooking class with my boyfriend. We were staying in Kuta at the time and decided to utilize the transportation offered by our hotel to get to Dotty's house. Dotty does provide a transportation service, and I realized that we should have taken her up on that offer. Our driver was a bit of a headache to say the least. At one point I didn't think we would make it to the class on time. I was able to communicate with Dotty through WhatsApp, and she called to talk to our driver to help navigate him. I am happy we arrived to the class with the assistance of Dotty. We took the class with two other women. They are from Italy, and it was fun to get to know them. We started the class gathered in Dotty's kitchen. She made us all feel very comfortable. We were all encouraged and able to participate in creating the dishes based on our own confidence levels. My boyfriend decided to watch for the most part, while myself and my two new friends worked on slicing and dicing ingredients to add to our dishes. Even though Grayson preferred to watch, he still learned so much! I think he was amazed to discover how simple cooking can be. We enjoyed our lunch together after cooking. It was fun to sit and visit with everyone and get to know about different cultures. The lunch was delicious! It was pretty enough to be served at a restaurant. I was surprised that we were able to create so many dishes in such a short amount of time. I very much appreciated that each of the recipes were realistically achievable for anyone to complete. I can see myself making these dishes at home. Nothing seemed to be too intimidating to try to recreate. Even Grayson still raves about how easy it was to make such tasty rice! After the completion of our class, Grayson and I planned on going to Tanah Lot...another trip I recommend! It is located close to Dotty's house, so it made for a great addition to our day. Our driver ended up being late did I mention he was a headache? and Dotty helped us communicate with him by calling him. Dotty was kind enough to let us stay and wait for our driver at her house. We very much enjoyed her company. Dotty is a kind and passionate chef. Many of our conversations, inside and outside of the kitchen, would end by talking about how meals bring friends and family together. It was wonderful to see her passion shine. I would recommend this tour to everyone! Dotty has an incredible talent and a beautiful soul. I am very grateful that she is willing to open her home to tourists like me. I wish you all the best, Dotty. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!
