About this activity
The word ‘bento’ derives from a southern Song Dynasty slang term for convenience and is said to date back to the 13th century. This is ancient Japanese eating. In this 3-hour cooking class, learn the old art of making a proper Japanese bento box meal.

The lesson begins with master chefs explaining Japanese-style seasoning and offering a demonstration on various Japanese cooking techniques. Afterward they hand the knives over to you. Cook several bento specialties, such as a nourishing miso soup, tempura vegetables and even an eggroll, a staple in every Japanese child’s school lunchbox. The menu changes every three months, and always includes seasonal ingredients.

When the cooking is done, put the knives away and prepare to eat. Snack away on everything you’ve cooked, sitting with the other participants and enjoying a traditional Japanese bento meal. At the end of the 3-hour lesson, leave with the recipes of the dishes you’ve cooked, so you can prepare the meal for friends and family back home.

I absolutely LOVED this class. The instructors were so friendly and helped through the entire process. It was a small group and we all had turns learning and asking questions. I was so proud to have created the entire bento box by myself - and it was so delicious!!

My boyfriend and I enjoyed this activity so much. We prepared 5 different dishes: miso soup, spinach with sesame, teriyaki chicken, shrimp and vegetables tempura and rolled sushi with tamagoyaki (egg omelette). I use to cook some of these meals at home but I've learnt many useful tips!

Had the best time in this wonderful class. Learned to make some oishi delicious! dishes, including one of my favorites -- gomaae! It's a very attractive setup, the teacher and assistants were super, and the food we made: WOW! My fellow students were all into it and we had a great time, and a delectable bento box lunch we had each made! I have taken the recipes and teachings and been creating my own delicious Japanese food since returning. Seems I always have a pot of dashi on the stove or in the fridge as the heart of so many recipes. the class's benefits just keep on going! Highly recommended!!!

An incredible class! The food we made wa ps great. The best part was that there was only another person in the class which made it very personal. I loved it. Our teacher Keiko was great and the kitchen where we had the class was professional and very beautiful. I highly recommend it!

Had a great time making a bento box. The class was only 6 people so it made it easy to listen, ask questions and get to know everyone. We learned a lot about Japanese foods and culture. Recommended!
