About this activity
Meet your guide at a machiya – a traditional wooden townhouse that’s typically found in the historical capital – providing an authentic atmosphere for your calligraphy or origami lesson. (The location is just a 5-minute walk from the south end of the Kyoto Imperial Palace.)
After a demonstration by an expert instructor, you’ll have plenty of time to experiment with brush strokes or paper-folding techniques, depending on which class you’ve selected. Your English-speaking guide will translate your native Japanese teacher’s instructions as well as offer assistance during your lesson. If you upgrade your experience to include the kimono-wearing session, you’ll have the opportunity to keep it on while you fold origami. (See descriptions of each option below.)

Our origami sensei was a lovely lady who taught us a number of different origami skills. Our daughter loved the experience, as did we. Highly recommend this experience.
My fiance and I took a private calligraphy class together. The teacher did a great job guiding us and helping us to paint perfect calligraphy strokes. Calligraphy is much harder than we thought, but by the end of class we got the hang of it! We were able to take home all of our practice pages, and also our final 'masterpiece' which we've displayed on our wall at home :
An easy to find location, around the corner from the National Museum.Thoroughly enjoyed this calligraphy lesson with Yoshei. I have a martial arts background so I can appreciate the spirit and process of this traditional calligraphy. Yoshei was a very genuine practitioner of the art, and was very encouraging and supportive while you were made aware of the disciplines of the tradition. Yoshei made sure you'd have something to take home it can cost for retail calligraphy. It felt a bit rushed, I could have comfortably spent 1.5 hrs instead of 1hr and paid a bit extra for this unique experience. Really nice teacher and experience!
Our family of 4 enjoyed the calligraphy class. It was very informative and we got to practice several times and we got to take home our best writing. We are glad we took the class. We went to the wrong address first as it was not clear exactly where the class was.
