About this activity
Your private driver picks you up in the morning or afternoon, and delivers you by private vehicle to the Miho Museum, located southeast of Kyoto. Upon arrival, you have several hours of free time to explore the museum at your leisure.

The Miho Museum, built by renowned architect I. M. Pei, is designed to showcase its natural and man-made surroundings, nestled deep in a wooded hill in the Shiga mountains. Approximately three-quarters of the museum is carved into the underground rock, with a skylighted roof and windows that look out on bamboo gardens and surrounding valleys.

Walk down corridors constructed of limestone to find two wings of exhibits that feature a private collection of Asian and Western antiques by the museum’s founder Koyama Mihoko — a textile business heiress and one of the wealthiest women in Japan. In the north wing you’ll find Japanese porcelain, scrolls, screens and Buddhist relics; the south wing houses antiquities produced by a range of civilizations including jewelry, frescoes, textiles and statues from ancient Egypt to classical Rome.

While there are more than 2,000 pieces in the permanent collection, approximately 250 are displayed at any one time, and special exhibits change every few months. All artwork is labelled in English and Japanese, with explanatory leaflets in some of the galleries so you can gain insight into the significance of the historical pieces.

When you’re hungry, head to the Miho Museum's tea room or restaurant that serves udon or soba noodles for lunch (own expense). Both venues also provide organic vegetarian options.

At the designated meeting time and place, you’re picked up by private vehicle and transferred back to your accommodation in Kyoto.
Please note: A minimum of 2 people per booking is required.
