Tea Ceremony experience and Tasting Course in Kyoto

40 min
About this activity
Experience the tea ceremony in a temple that has 400 years of history. Drink matcha with sweets that differ according to the season. Learn the spirit of the tea ceremony.
The temple was established in 1671 and continues to exist for 400 years while escaping all kinds of disasters. It was created by Kodai-in, the wife of Toyotomi Hideyoshi in order to pray for his soul. Nearby you will find the Yasaka-no-to Pagoda, famous for being built by prince Shotoku who established the constitution for the first time in Japan.
One of the pleasures of the tea ceremony is that you can also enjoy the sweets with your eyes because of the flowers and the landscapes of the season. While watching the demonstration by the teacher, you will be taught how to make matcha. The process of making tea is as follows. First use a chashaku (a small spoon used for powdered green tea) and scoop one and a half spoon of powdered tea and put it into the bowl. Then pour boiling water into the bowl. The proper amount of the hot water is half of the tea ladle. Lastly, prepare tea using a chasen (a bamboo tea whisk). This is the most difficult part so please listen to the instructor carefully.
When you are finished you will receive matcha. Matcha is a little bitter, but it is very good for your health. First you take the bowl with your right hand and you then put it on the palm of your left hand. Then you need to turn the bowl in a clockwise direction. When you are done with drinking lightly wipe the part of the bowl where your lips touched with your right hand and place the bowl in front of you to take a look at it.
In ancient Japan there were no tables and chairs, so it was always custom to sit on the floor. When sitting on the floor people in Japan sit in "seiza” position but when you are not used to it, your feet will fall asleep. Nowadays, the feet of Japanese people also fall asleep. We can prepare chairs in special occasions, so if needed please contact us beforehand. Please try to experience the deep world of the tea ceremony.
The tea ceremony is closely related to Zen Buddhism, creating a spiritual culture called "Wabi / Sabi." "Wabi / Sabi" means to accept unfilled conditions such as dreadfulness and loneliness and to act modestly. Inside this, there is also the way of thinking called "Ichigo Ichie." It means that you will meet most people only once in your life, so you must cares for others and do your best.
In order to experience the best encounter in the quiet tea room, the host will not only entertain the guests with matcha and the tea ceremony expressing the season, but also with writings and flowers.
