About this activity
Tazumal includes a series of structures which where the scenery of an important and sophisticated Mayan settlement that existed between 400 dC and 1200 DC. The vestiges include 2 pyramids, a ball court and other structures. Tazumal was a Mayan Regional Center, and even if the site has been destroyed by Chalchuapas new settlement, some history has been able to be rescue. In Chalchuapa or River of Little Jades in Nahuatl language, there are jade workshops and clay workshops where copies of archaeological vestiges are made. Tazumal means place of many lakes in Nahuatl. Other mayan temples of interests are: Pyramids of San Andres Dating from the Late Classic period, La Campana de San Andres is set in a fertile valley between the San Salvador Volcano and the Ilamatepec range. The partially excavated site contains an acropolis and a plaza with pyramids and platforms on three sides. Joya de Ceren Human Heritage Thirty minutes outside the capital on the Pan-American Highway traveling towards Guatemala, is the site of Joya de Ceren, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in Mesoamerica in several decades. Juayua waterfalls Los Chorros de La Calera Juayua is a small twon with a pleasant weather and natural beauty, waterfalls, food festival and a variety of entertainment during the weekends. Its name in Nahuatl language means "River of Orchids Dwellings. Chorros de Calera is a series of impressive waterfalls, waterfalls are 10 mins in the driving distance then a short hike. There are everal pools with a very fresh water from the water flowing from the mountain. Chorros de La Calera un Juayua is pure natural beauty.
