About this activity
At 6:00am you will be picked up from your hotel and begin the tour by crossing the “Bolivian High Plateau” to your destiny: the Sajama National Park, in the department of Oruro. The park is located at an altitude of more than 4200masl and there you will have the unique delight to see the highest mountain of Bolivia: the Sajama Mountain, which´s summit reaches the 6542 meters.
On your way to the park you will visit the Curahuara de Carangas Church, one of the oldest of the continent called “The Sistine Chapel of the Altiplano” for the beauty of its room´s paintings.
Finally, you will arrive to the Sajama National Park; first you will visit the Huayna Kota Lagoon where you will have the chance to observe Andean flamingos before enjoying a bath at hot springs near the town of Sajama. In the afternoon walk through the queñua forest, a endemic sub specie of the region, which is the stem that grows at highest altitude in the world, and you will enjoy camelid wildlife observing vicuñas, llamas and alpacas.

If you take this tour from La Paz, you have to be aware that it is a long drive there and back, but you do get a good sense of the size and beauty of Bolivia. Our guide, Gloria, was an excellent, experienced and thoughtful guide. She showed us ancient burial sites, and very interesting stone formations on our way to Sajama something like Brice National Park in the U.S.. We really enjoyed her interpretation of her native Bolivia. The visit of the old beautiful church in the middle of a small town was very memorable, as we waited for a local lady to open the church and then the alarm went off bonus!. This is not a very touristy area, as we saw only one more tourist besides two of us. Thus, you really have an opportunity to experience Bolivia off the beaten path. Sajama National Park is huge again, we didn't see other tourists besides us. We enjoyed a natural really natural! thermal bath, a walk where Gloria explained local flora and fauna, and a visit to Laguna unfortunately, flamingos, that were supposed to be there - were not there. However, Sajama mountain was always there! Plus, we visited a local, old, small church.
