This is an all-day trip, 2.5-3 hours each way. Some of the views are wonderful. At Zermatt, the guide got everyone tickets (at our additional expense) up the funicular to Sunnegga, a shorter ride and way less expensive than the train to Gornergrat. The view of the Matterhorn was perfect. You can eat at the cafeteria up there while taking in the view. We were worried about bad weather, since the US Weather Channel was calling for rain. It was warmer than their prediction and there was not a cloud in the sky. As our guide said, only check the Switzerland weather forecast!
Fantastic trip. Would recommend it but be aware that Zermatt is quite expensive.
I didn't know whether to give this trip four stars, but it would have only been because of the weather which seemed a little unfair, so five stars it is... It is a long day but the scenery is stunning and Simona our guide was very informative. The pick up from the hotels took a while, but as mine was outside of Stresa, I was grateful for it. There is a short stop on top of the Simplon pass before going on to Zermatt. You have about three hours to spend in Zermatt as you like. I opted for the funicular trip to Sunegga, which theoretically should give you a great view of the Matterhorn, but low cloud sadly put paid to that. The funicular itself, although expensive, was an interesting experience and an undeniably incredible feat of engineering. I still had time to look around the shops before the journey home, disappointed that I didn't get the views, but I had a worthwhile day nonetheless.
