About this activity
Day 1: Arrive at Lhasa

Upon arrival in Lhasa, your guide will meet and transfer you to the downtown hotel. Walk around Barkhor street in the evening with local pilgrims at your leisure.

Day 2: Visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple and Barkhor Street (B)

In the morning, visit Potala Palace, Johkang Temple and wander into Barkor Street.

Day 3: Visit Drepung and Sera Monasteries (B)

Visit two of the largest gelugpa institutions, Draping and Sera Monasteries, which were founded in the 15th century. Sera Monastery is known for its Buddhist monk debate in religious philosophies.

Day 4: Pabongkha to Sera Monastery Day Hiking (B)

Visit Pabongkha Monastery, an important historical monastery dating back to 7th century. Pabongkha is the place where Tibetan calligraphy had firstly designed by Tonmi Sambhota. You will hike over the active "Sky burial" to Tashi Choling monastery and then continue to Takten Mediation Cave (13,780ft). Have lunch here (packed lunch) and drink the blessed spring-water from this very cave. Continue hiking towards Sera Monastery that will charm you with bird's eyes view of Lhasa.

Day 5: Set out to Gyangtse (Horseback Ridring 3-4hours) (B)

Drive out of Lhasa. It is nearly 69 miles to the top of Kambala pass (13,042ft) where you will have fantastic panoramic view of Yamdrok Lake and Mt. Nyenchen Gangsang. Soak up the beautiful scenery for half an hour and then ride a horse down to the lake towards the shore of Nagarze. After 3-4 hours of horseback riding experience, you will drive to Nagarze and stop for lunch. After lunch break, continue driving to Gyangtse through Karola glacier, Semi-la pass.

Day 6: Set out for Shekar (B)

Visit the great Gyangtse Stupa and Pekoe Choede Monastery. Drive around (56mi/90km) to Shigatse and visit Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, the seat of Panchen Lamas. Then, you will drive another 94 miles (150 kilometers) to Lhatse.

Overnight: Shanghai Hotel or similar

Day 7: Drive to Rongphu Monastery (B)

Drive to Rongbu Monastery (5150m), the highest monastery in the world. You will definitely enjoy your long-lasting feelings near Mt. Everest Base Camp in the rest of the evening.

Overnight: Tented Guesthouse

Day 8: 1-2hrs Hiking to Everest Base Camp and Drive to Shigatse

Before sunrise, you will hike around 1-2hrs to the Mt. Everest Base Camp. On the way back to Shigatse, you will visit Sakya Monastery, the largest monastery belonging to Sakyapa Sect.

Overnight: Gangjian Hotel or similar

Day 9: Drive to Lhasa and Transfer to Airport or Train Station

You will drive through Gorges along the Yarlung Tsangpo River to Gonggar Airport. Your local guide and driver will transfer you to the airport to catch your afternoon flight for your next destination.

  • All foreigners traveling to the Tibet Autonomous Region (i.e. Central Tibet) NEED a Tibet travel permit - you cannot board a plane or train to the region without it.
