Day Tour: Tibet Drepung and Sera Monasteries

1 day
About this activity
At 9:30am, the tour guide will be in the lobby of GangGyan Hotel, Lhasa, to provide transportation to Drepung Monastery, one of the 'great three' Gelug university monasteries of Tibet, founded in 1416 by Jamming Choge, one of Tsongkhapa's main disciples.

Drepung Monastery was used as the Dalai Lama's palace in the Drepung before permanently relocating to Potala Palace. The grand monastery was built along the mountains covering over 650,000 square feet. With numerous mansions and zigzagging alleys, the monastery looks like an impressive city in itself.

In the afternoon, continue to Sera Monastery. It is also one of the 'great three' Gelug university monasteries of Tibet, but was founded in 1419 by Jamchen Chojey, another main disciple of Tsongkhapa's. The highlight of Sera Monastery is the debate of monks around 3-to-5pm daily, except Sundays.

The tour ends with a return trip to GangGyan Hotel in Lhasa by 5:30pm.
