Stop At: Zambartas Winery, 39, Grigores Afxentiou Street Agios Amvrosios, Limassol 4710 Cyprus

Zambartas Wineries was founded by Akis Zambartas in 2006. After years in the wine business as Chief Winemaker and Managing Director of one of the biggest wine producers in Cyprus, he decided to follow his dream of establishing his own boutique winery. The pivotal point was the decision of his son, Marcos Zambartas, to quit the corporate world and fly to Australia to become a winemaker.

In 2007 the Zambartas Winery was built in the Krasochoria region in Agios Amvrosios village, on the southern slope of the Troodos Mountains near Limassol.

In 2008, Marcos returned from Australia with a Master in Winemaking from the University of Adelaide and joined his father on the cellar floor. The first years working together in the new winery were a constant quest for finding good quality grapes and creating high quality wines. In the meanwhile we managed to build a brand that people would grow to love.

Since then, Zambartas Wineries has continued to successfully develop both vineyards and winery. Sémillon, Lefkada and Maratheftiko grapes were planted, which turned from humble cuttings to fruit-producing plants. We also acquired old Xynisteri and Mavro vineyards. Our range of 10 wines were awarded with over 50 medals in local and international wine competitions, and our winery received acclaim from well-known wine journalists.

Marcos currently runs the winery together with his wife Marleen and their dedicated team with a lot of passion and enthusiasm. New projects, goals and challenges lay ahead, which we take up with a lot of happiness, knowing that our wines are an integral part of people having a great time together.

Stop At: Vlassides Winery, Koilani, Limassol 4776 Cyprus

Driven by his love and passion for wine, Sophocles Vlassides realized his lifelong dream by establishing Vlassides Winery in 1998.

Sophocles' interest in wines led him to study Oenology at the University of California Davis (UC Davis), a world-renowned institution for research and teaching in the fields of Viticulture and Oenology. Sophocles also holds a Chemical Engineering degree from Imperial College London.

Vlassides Winery currently produces over 120 000 bottles annually mostly from the grape varieties Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Xynisteri. Over the past few years, we have been experimenting with some indigenous Cypriot varieties like Maratheftiko, Yiannoudi (red), Promara and Morokanella (white) and thus new wines may soon be announced.

The quality of Vlassides Winery has always been based on a commitment to select the finest fruits. Our vineyards are located in the picturesque region of Kilani village, just south of Troodos. The altitude of the vineyards ranges from 700m to 1100m above sea level, and the soil is mainly calcareous. In addition to our estate vineyards, we source grapes from selected number of independent vineyards within the region which we closely supervise to ensure the grapes meet our quality standards.

Stop At: Tsiakkas Winery, 4878, Pelendri Cyprus

Tsiakkas winery was established in 1988 just outside Pelendri village on the Troodos Mountains, in the Pitsilia wine region. The first year’s production was 500 bottles of a red wine called Thyrsos. Gradually new wines were made with the addition of a white and a rose wine. The very first wines were made from local varieties as the international varieties were almost nonexistent in the Pitsilia region. In the late 90s, more and more international varieties were used to make the wines of the winery. These varieties included Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Cabernet, Merlot and Grenache. Although some of them are still used by the winery, in the recent years, there is a shift towards Cypriot varieties. Old forgotten varieties are replanted like Yiannoudi and Promara. More research was done on Xynisteri and Vamvakada, both in the vineyard and the winery. Recently a new style of Commandaria and Zivania were added to the products of the winery. The total acreage of the vineyards under winery management stands now at 13 hectares. These are situated in Pelendri, and nearby villages. All our vineyards are certified organic, since 1995. Gradually affiliated winegrowers were convinced to follow organic cultivation as well.

Today the winery produces 200,000 bottles a year and sells mainly to the local market. Upscale restaurants, 5 star hotels, wine shops and a small number of supermarket chains constitute the local clientele. Exports are made to nine countries, namely to Greece, England, USA, France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, China and Belgium. Wine is also available from the winery which is open to visitors every day from 09:00 till 16:00. On Sundays and major holidays the winery is closed.

Daily winery tours and tastings are carried on daily. The winery has won many international awards for its wines with the latest being a Regional Trophy from Decanter wine competition, in London, scores of 91 and 94 by Robert Parker, Best wine of the show in the US, Gold cup in Moscow, Gold awards in international and local wine competitions, and best spirit of the show for two consecutive years for our zivania. Tsiakkas Commandaria was also on the list of the 100 best wines according to VINUM magazine in Switzerland, among 6000 wines from all over the world.

The winery aspires to give Cyprus its previous glory as a quality wine producing country and this is why it is constantly experimenting both in the vineyard and the winery.
