About this activity

Cross the Tagus River to the south back as you cross over the 25th of April Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) and discover all of the natural wonders of this region. The Arrábida Mountain is a green wonder open to the Atlantic with a Mediterranean atmosphere. On the way to this beautiful place (it has an appliance to become an UNESCO World Heritage Site), you'll pass by several important places, such as the statue of Cristo Rei, very similar to the Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro.

Exiting the surrounding suburbs of Lisbon, we go to Setubal. In the beginning of the 20th century, Setúbal was the most important center of Portugal's fishing industry but it slowly declined until it eventually ended. None of the many factories are operating today. However, the existing maritime ports, either traditional or commercial and the new harbors, still keep the city very close to the ocean.

From here we will be starting our dolphin watching boat ride. Prepare yourself for a great time as you watch the local bottle-nose dolphins in the Sado Estuary on a scenic cruise from Setubal. Board the boat and then cruise along the Sado River towards Arrábida National Park. Interact with the delightful creatures as they feed, socialize and frolic in the water. Benefit from the explanations of marine biologist who will enlighten you about the environment and the area biodiversity. If the weather conditions allow, and there is interest among the participants, get a cool swim in the calm and crystal-clear waters.

Afterwards we go to lunch in Setubal (not included) to regain some strength. From here we go on a panoramic ride along the Arrábida Mountain. You'll pass by beautiful forest areas and vineyards where some of the best muscat wines in the world are produced, and watch astonishing views over the Atlantic Ocean. Try the traditional pastry of Azeitão (Torta de Azeitão) and a local Muscat wine (Moscatel de Setúbal). There's still time to stop and see the view from strategic points in the mountain.

Next stop is the fishing village of Sesimbra with its impressive 12th century castle watching the bay from atop. Finally we go towards the Espichel Cape (30 / 45 min approx.), a location better known for its raw beauty and its 18th century sanctuary of Our Lady of the Cape. This is a protected area and you can also see a dinosaur footprint track with millions of years old.

Enjoy the ride back to Lisbon as you see again the views over the Ocean as the sun sets.
