About this activity
For the Sintra Cascais Tour. Sintra is one of those magical places where man and nature come together in a perfect symbiosis, as if wishing to leave us in a state of permanent surprise, enraptured by the beauty of their joint efforts. We’ll start with a small walk through the mysterious Pena Park and discover secret caves and trails. Afterwards we’ll visit the Pena National Palace, a marvelous fairy tale palace from the 19th century, which is also one of the most important examples of the Portuguese architecture from the Romantic period. Then we’ll head to the historical centre of Sintra where you’ll have free time to explore and also to visit the Sintra National Palace. After lunch, we’ll drive through the natural wonders of the Sintra Natural Park, passing by several impressive palaces and then stop at the Roca Cape cliffs - The westernmost point of Continental Europe! Next we’ll take you for a scenic drive along the Atlantic coast; we’ll stop at the Guincho Beach (a surfer’s paradise!) and afterwards pass by Boca do Inferno (Hell’s mouth cliff). As last, enjoy a walk along the bay in the glamorous town of Cascais.

For the Tomar Mafra Tour. We will drive you to Tomar through the agricultural lands of Ribatejo. In Tomar we visit the Convento de Cristo (Convent of Christ), originally built by the Knight Templars, and explore its Templar castle, romanesque round, manualine church, renaissance convent and monastic enclosures. Learn how the Knight Templars originated the Order of Christ, and how this new order became pivotal in the Age of Discoveries. This convent was then partly forgotten until becoming the UNESCO world heritage site of today. Stop for lunch in the beautiful city of Tomar, with it’s Nabão river crossing the town. Hear about the Jewish heritage in the city and explore its narrow streets full of history, stopping for a meal of traditional Portuguese food in one of its many restaurants (meal not included in the price). After lunch, we will return to the car and head back to the town of Mafra. In Mafra, be amazed by the scale of the sumptuous baroque Mafra National Palace, with its 220-meter-long façade, 1200 rooms and 4700 doors and windows. Take your time to explore it’s many rooms without missing the big library with its colony of bats, which protect the books from harmful insects. Learn how the palace played an important role to the end of the Portuguese monarchy. If there is time, enjoy a traditional sweet in a typical pastry shop (not included) before returning back to Lisbon
