About this activity
After pickup from your hotel or accommodation, head to Óbidos. Cross the impressive “village gate” and see the famous Portuguese blue tiles, then walk through the narrow streets inside the walls of the castle. Enjoy the many churches and the wonderful views of the village, land and sea, as well as the flowers that cover the windows, door arches and balconies. You can also stop to try a famous, local liqueur.
From Óbidos, you will drive along the coast, passing the small bay of São Martinho do Porto before reaching Nazaré. Explore this fishing village, which is famous for its delicious seafood. There are numerous choices for lunch (at own expense). Above the hill, in Sítio you can visit a famous sanctuary and also get the best views of the bay.
Heading inland, you will come to Alcobaça, an old town which grew around one of the most important monasteries in Portugal. Here you can see the abbey as well as the tombs of several Portuguese kings and noblemen. You can also stop for a treat at one of the best local bakeries in front of the monastery.
Continuing on, if time permits, you can stop at the Monastery of Batalha, a great example of the late Gothic style.
Lastly, the winding mountain roads will lead you to Fátima, the “Altar of the World.” Over six million people visit Fátima every year to walk between the old basilica and the new, with the small chapel in between.
You can then be transferred back to your original departure point or to any other location in Lisbon.
