Livorno Shore Excursion: Private Day Trip to Siena and San Gimignano

About this activity
Draped on three hills, Siena is an incredibly beautiful city, with quaint streets and a gothic cathedral – the Duomo is one of the most spectacular in Italy and one of the few to have been built south of the Alps in full gothic style. Once you’ve experienced its charm, you’ll understand why Siena has been the setting for films, photographs and advertising campaigns. Soak up as much of this enchanting town as you can before heading to San Gimignano.

On the way to San Gimignano, you will stop in Monteriggioni, one of the most classical towns in Italy. This small village was built by the Senesis in the years 1213-1219 on a hillock overlooking the Cassia Road. Here, you'll have the chance to enjoy a true Tuscan meal (additional cost).

After lunch, you will arrive in San Gimignano, built on a hill that dominates the Elsa Valley, with towers that date back to the 11th century. In San Gimignano, you can admire famous sites like the Duomo, the Collegiate Church, the Palazzo del Popolo, the Palazzo Nuovo del Podestà (which is now the town hall) and the S. Agostino Church. Or simply enjoy your free time by people-watching in a local bar or shopping till you drop in the local shops. When you’ve finished exploring San Gimignano, jump back in your luxury minivan for your transfer back to your ship in Livorno.

For a more in depth experience, upgrade your tour to include a private guide for two hours in Siena and San Gimignano and entrance into the cathedral. If you don’t upgrade, you’ll simply explore Siena and San Gimignano on your own.

Two couples from a cruise in Livorno had one day for overview of Tuscany; we chose Siena and San Gimignano...good choice! Our tour guide Valerio was fun, informative, a very good driver, and recommended good spots for eating and shopping. We unreservedly recommend both him, and Viator!

Francesco was amazing. We had the most awesome day. Took us to several towns on way to Siena at our request. Made lunch reservations for us.

This was our first private excursion and I cannot say enough about how great our driver/guide Alessio Alex was! We visited Siena, San Gimignano and Monteriggioni. Alex took the time to discuss our day and determine what we wanted/expected. He then tailored the day to fit us. His personality and and knowledge made the trip enjoyable and educational. We were able to see quite a bit of off the beaten path Tuscany on the back roads back to the ship. If I could give Alex and this excursion more than 5 stars I definitely would!

We chose this tour instead of some other excursions offered by our cruise ship when recently visiting the port of Livorno. We're glad we did. We're not sure what we enjoyed more -- the day-long drive through and visit to beautiful Tuscany and several of its sites, including Monteriggioni, Siena, San Gimignano, and a local winery, or, the professional service provided by and getting to know our driver, Alessandro. He was simply great. He was impeccably dressed, met us on the pier at the designated time with a sign with our name, a big smile and a warm hand shake for each of our group of 6 adults and two teenage boys. He then escorted us quickly to his large, clean, new and air conditioned van, and then provided us with cold water. Throughout the day he enthusiastically answered our questions, provided us with interesting information about the places we were passing through and visiting, got us close to the places we were visiting, and then patiently waited for us. We felt we learned as much about the area and culture from our conversations with Alessandro as we did about the places we visited and reading various tourist information we had about the areas. For lunch, we went with one of Alessandro's suggestions and visited a local winery, Podere La Marronaia, in a farm-house setting with beautiful views just outide of San Gimignano. We enjoyed our stop there very much, eating home-cooked pasta, along with fresh breads, hams, and cheeses, and tasting several local wines and olive oils. The people at the winery, like Alessandro, were very friendly, informative, and passionate about sharing and answering all of our questions adding to our memorable day. We ended our day as scheduled back at the port at the designated time, well before our ship departed for its next port. Grazie, Alessandro, for a great day and life-time memory. We highly recommend this trip and would give it more than 5 stars if we could.

Amazing trip through the Tuscany Valley to Siena and San Gimignano. Our driver Luigi was excellent and pointed out points of interest along the way. He also arranged a wine-tasting and lunch for us at a small family-owned vineyard which we thoroughly enjoyed. We had enough time in Siena and San Gimignano to wander around and enjoy the towns on our own. Overall, it was a wonderful day and a trip we highly recommend.

Davide was a superb tour guide and arranged for a luncheon which was a highlight of our trip. Very punctual, professional, knowledgeable, and conversational. This was our favorite excursion of the trip.
