Why Watch Company

Besides an enticing storyline that reflects the romantic troubles of adults in first-world countries today, the show features some of the best actresses in the industry. Patti LuPone is a legendary performer who has acted in a variety of roles like Fantine in Les Miserables, Eva Peron in Evita, and Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. In this musical, Patti LuPone plays the dynamic Joanne. Rosalie Craig joins LuPone on stage as the protagonist ‘Bobbie’. She is an Olivier Award nominee who has acted in some of the biggest theatrical productions like The Light Princess and the City of Angels.

Company was revived on multiple occasions since its first production at the Alvin Theatre in 1970 due to its popularity. It is Sondheim’s most frequently staged musical, and has been featured at both Broadway and West End. Director Marianne Elliott was allowed the creative freedom to reverse the gender of the protagonist by Sondheim. The play offers an intriguing modern outlook on the social institution of marriage.

The Story

At Bobbie’s 35th birthday celebration, she finds herself in a somewhat precarious social situation, when her friends begin to start asking her why she is still single. Everyone wants to know when she will find the right person with whom she can start a family. The musical goes on to explore Bobbi’s relationships with a sequence of short vignettes, while managing to effectively break the stereotypical idea of what constitutes a romantic relationship in the modern world. The director, Marianne Elliott, manages to add her own unique flavour to the musical comedy. How will Bobbi continue with her romantic endeavours? Will she ever find someone who is right for her? Company is a limited run West End production that is certainly worth a watch this season.
