Matthew Bourne's Romeo and Juliet
After opening for roles in the show were announced as early as April 2018, the selection committee received over a thousand applications from across the UK. Of these, a mere six applicants were chosen to perform with the renowned New Adventures company. From seasoned performers like Seren Williams and Andrew Monaghan to energetic young dancers such as Harrison Dowzell and Bryony Wood, who were discovered during their auditions, Romeo and Juliet is charged with an incredibly talented cast. Matthew Bourne himself is known for his extraordinary storytelling and meticulous attention to detail, and this could well be his magnum opus. The performance is also backed by a great supporting team consisting of costume design by Lez Brotherston, sound by Paul Groothuis, and artistic direction by Etta Murfitt.
The StoryShakespeare’s immortal Romeo and Juliet has been converted into a neo-classical tale expressed through dance. It remains loyal to the original script in most places. Set in Verona, Italy, the story features two families, the Montague and Capulet houses, locked in a feud. Romeo, a young man from the Montague family, falls deeply in love with a woman named Juliet from the Capulet house. They marry in secret at a chapel with the help of a loyal nurse and Friar Laurence. After a series of mishaps and just one night together, the couple is torn apart by circumstances. The tale ends in tragedy, with Romeo gulping down poison at the sight of Juliet’s supposedly dead body. Watch this classic brought back to life in an unconventional and brilliantly choreographed manner at the West End.
