About this activity

On the edge of Hampstead Heath, Kenwood House is a hidden gem with a fascinating social history. It was acquired by several families over the course of the 18th century from London merchant John Walter to the 2nd Duke of Argyll to the 3rd Earl of Bute and finally Lord Mansfield, who in 1766 adopted a niece and two grand-nieces. Among these was ‘Dido’ Elizabeth Belle, the mixed-race illegitimate daughter of Sir John Lindsay who was brought up as a genteel lady in England. Lord Mansfield was Lord Chief Justice and presided over a number of cases that examined the legality of the slave trade, which he reportedly described as ‘odious’.

Join us to see the wonderful architecture and art, and learn more about life in an 18th century country retreat.
